Florida Business vs Hobby

There are a few things I want to try for work. I am currently unemployed single mom and trying to bring in some money. Unemployment is taking forever and if I can make something work, that would be ideal so now is the time to see if I can succeed at that. One is to have a consulting business, another is selling baking kits at farmers market and another is selling jewelry at consignment and jewelry parties.

I called Division of Corporations and they said that I only need one business name and I can do whatever industry or multiple things with that business. (So I need to think of all encompassing business name. )

What I wanted to ask other moms is:
If i make money doing a hobby, do i have to report that on taxes?
If i have to claim it on personal taxes, I might as well have it as a business right?
If I have lots of inventory, does that make it a business and not a hobby?

I am just starting out with all of this and who knows what will happen. It seems weird that I would have to do a business name and report income and pay taxes (even if it is zero sales) on something in order to sell?

Does anyone have insight or have been through this before?

What can I do next?

We run our own business which is consulting and raw materials.

You need to discuss options with legal and tax counsel. If you are being paid by someone for consulting or selling the items you make on the side, that all has to be reported and you myst have a sales and use tax form as well as a W-9 and tax id number.

Depending on how small you stay.. you may or may not have to be as detailed as we are. I also must file tax returns and Sales and Use for the state quarterly and pay all payroll taxes, etc monthly.

Before you jump into anything, make sure you have all the details locked in because the last thing you want is the IRS on your back for not doing something correctly. The IRS does not buy the "I didn't know that" excuse.

Bottom line, if you generate income, you report it or you take the chance of large fines for avoiding the proper paperwork.

Best of luck to you!!

The moment you turn your hobby into an income-generating activity, you have to report your income to the IRS. Whether you owe income tax on it or not, I am not certain, but you MUST report it.

You don't have to set it up as a business; it can go on your personal return.
