Fixing Chipped Baby Tooth

Is having my 2 year old son's chipped tooth bonded or filled to make it look normal considered cosmetic? Have any other moms out there worried as much as I am over their child's chipped tooth? I feel like I am worrying too much. I know it's just a chipped tooth. There's nothing wrong with it, and otherwise, he's very healthy. I'm thankful for that, but I just can't help it. I don't want him to be self-concious of his beautiful smile when he gets a little older.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I called the dentist. They said what all of you have said....it's normal for it to turn dark, it may or may not turn white again. I will keep an eye on it and just let it be. If it bothers him later on down the road, we will see what we can do to fix it. And you know what?... I think it probably is less obvious than I thought. I think I notice it more because I'm his mommy and I'm used to seeing a whole tooth there:) But really, he has to give a really big toothy smile or open his mouth completely to really see it. If it doesn't bother him, I'm not going to let it bother me:)

Hi L.,

These are not permenant teeth so maybe they know he will lose it anyway.

Call the doc and talk to him about your concerns.

Good luck. D.

Hi L., Talk to your dentist. He won't be self-conscience of that smile unless you are or someone put's that thought into his head! Remember he will be loosing that tooth sooner than you think! Best wishes.

My son (2) has a chip in his tooth. We could get it fixed but it doesn't bother him and we don't want to put him through the pain of having it fixed if it isn't necessary. His dentist also said to wait as the filling would be soft and he wouldn't be able to have hard food. Many, many kids have chipped teeth. They're baby teeth so they will fall out and be replaced. We have to watch it for discoloration and he goes every 6 months to dentist to check. I wouldn't put your son through the surgery if not neccessary and if it bothers him down the road then take action! We just brush it more and keep our eyes on it. We worry more about it and what other people will say (not them)!!! I know it's something that kept me up at night for a few days but in the end he wasn't bothered and I didn't want the pain of surgery to hurt him!

Is it that obvious? in about another 2-3 years it is going to come out. My son fell and chipped the second tooth next to the big tooth on the top of his mouth. It is not that obvious in his case so I left it alone. I do not know if a dentist would bond a tooth on a child that young and would probably consider it cosmetic. You can always call and find out. I think with boys in this situation it is less of a big deal than it would be with a girl.

i don't think you're overreacting. both of my kids have fallen and chipped their front tooth as toddlers. my oldest chipped hers pretty badly and we did have it fixed (3 times!!!....beware the filling they use to complete the tooth is much weaker than a real tooth so it will break easily) my youngest chipped both front teeth but the dentist said it's not really bad enough to fix. :( it breaks my heart every time i look at it!
