N.P.
I have a three year old and he uses mouthwash, but he says adult toothpaste burns his mouth. The mouthwash he uses is the ACT mouth wash. This is what the dentist recommended.
I would like to know when is it ok for a child to use grown up tooth paste? he does not have a cavity or anything just noticed his breath is strong sometimes. What about mouth wash?

Better hold off on the grown up toothpaste for awhile longer, but you can start teaching him to brush his whole mouth (not just the teeth). They have some great "cool" products now to help teach kids where the "yucky" stuff is in their mouths. Look for it near the children's toothpaste - it's a mouth rinse that turns the plaque blue so they can see it - and trust me, their lil tongues will be covered in it! Oral B just came out with a new brush that has a tongue cleaner on the back of it also. It's less... um ticklish on the tongue than a regular toothbrush. Good Luck!
Hello....well I have a 4 year old that uses adult toothpaste and listerine mouthwash (the orange one). They just have to know and remember to spit and not swallow the toothpaste or mouthwash. My son does really well but I am right there with him. First I pour a little bit of mouthwash in his mouth and he rinses and spits, then I put the toothpaste on his tooth brush and I brush his teeth, I make sure he spits, then I let him finish brushing and then I put a little more mouthwash in his mouth and he rinses and spits and last I use a cup and put some water in his mouth and he rinses and spits that too. He does really well. We have had no problems. The toothpaste we use is Aquafresh extreme clean. I don't like the kids toothpaste because I think it stinks and doesn't get his breath clean. Also he brushes twice a day. Hope this helps you.
It is about that time to start teaching him, but to be on the safe side, I would use kids toothpaste. Sometime young kids will ues toothpaste as a toy and eat too much.
Definately hold off on floridated toothpaste. Most kids like to eat/swallow the toothpaste and you don't want him to swallow too much. Stick with the unfloridated toothpaste, Listerine makes a product called Agent Cool Blue that works like the old tablets my doctor used to give me as a kid. They rinse for 30 sec and then spit out. It then turns all the plaque blue and helps them learn what is needed to get their teeth clean. As far as using mouthwash, that is your and his call. It is a good idea if he has bad breath, but work with him to find a flavor that he likes, then he is more likely to use it. Also, the toothbrush with the silicone tongue brushes are great. My whole family uses them. You might see a little blood when he spits, but that is because the cheek area also gets cleaned (it doen'st hurt) and like the gums with dental floss, it takes a little time of using it for the cheeks to stop being irritated.
My son was 2, and he brushed his teeth regular, with the toddler non floride. He ened up with a cavity. The Dentist told me to use floride toothpast. I ask about the swallowing and he told me thing only that would happen is a small stomach ach. I switch and have not had a problem. My daughter who is 2 now uses the folride kids toothpaste too. I just keep it out of her reach.
