Hi!

I'm from San Jose, Ca and I am looking for a great place to go fishing! My mom has always wanted to fish, but has never been. I want to take her for her birthday. I'd rather not go more than 4 hours away, and if I do I need a great place to stay. I would however, like to have beautiful scenery...Please let me know if you have any recommendations.... :-)

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi,

What a neat idea! I am not from California so can't give you specific sites. The idea of checkiing the city's tourist website is good. Also look into fishing at your state parks, there should be info online as to which parks have fishing.

Also, our newspaper has a hunting/fishing columnist (in the sports section)--doesn't write a column every day, only sometimes. If yours has a similar column, ask the writer for his/her advice.

Are you a member of AAA?They may also have info.

Good luck and have fun!

Go to your city's "tourist" website... each state seems to have one.
From there, they'd probably have info on fishing... or if you need a license etc.

Or, just do a Google Search on "fishing in Santa Clara." or San Jose where you are from.

That's funny -- a friends son just asked me that a week ago, so I asked a neighbor who fishes and this is our advice:

Fresh water, ocean or bay fishing? The Mercury News prints a one page "fishing report" in the sports sections -- it was Thusday last week, so get the paper tomorrow and check it out.

Also there is a good fishing store on De Anza Blvd in San Jose called "Fisherman's Warehouse" (or something like that). They will be able to tell you where to go (it varies month to month and year to year). They can also sell you a fishing licence (needed for freshwater fishing -- not sure about the other types) The store is just a little north of HWY 85, near the Mc Donalds (its between the cities of Cupertino and Saratoga).

When my 8 yr old daughter really wanted to fish (and I know nothing about fishing, and have no equipment) I brought her to the "sure catch trout ponds" right by the intersection of HWYS 85 and 101 in San Jose. I came home with 4 trout, but had to clean them myself. I thought I was smart because I thought to bring a cooler with ice in it to bring the fish back home -- it was a good choice. The fish were delicious. I've seen other people fish in that general area -- perculation ponds I think -- I'm not sure what its called.

Have fun!

Our family likes the fishing in Morro Bay. It is a bit far, but fishing off the jetty is not too taxing. Also, we take the kids to the pier in Pacifica. That way no one needs a fishing license. (we like the ocean). A little closer inland is Del Valle in Livermore. We have never fished there but it is beautiful and I have seen people fishing there.
