My daughter is 13 months old and I just asked this question to her pediatrician.
He said she could eat fish now but she should only eat saltwater and not freshwater. Also, he said fish low in mercury.
I don't think there is any specific age. I know I was feeding my son Fish sticks as soon as he had some teeth. That's a little different but I think the main concern is mercury which here in the US we really don't have many issues with.
yeah fish is excellent, just read up about what kinds of fish to avoid. It is the same ones you should avoid while you are pregnant, because of the mercury etc.
I actually just read an article about this the other day in a baby magazine. It says that fish is an excellent natural source of DHA and the omega 3 fatty acids and that babies aren't eating enough of it. It said that you can start feeding fish along with the other foods at 6 months, just of course very small pieces and no bones. It recommended getting the fish that is wild caught, they tended to have lower levels of mercury and stuff like that. I hope this helps.
I have given my baby fish at 8mon, tilapia. Its a not too fishy fish. Just no shellfish for awhile. And just like when a baby and you give them something new just watch him to see if he had any reaction.
If fish is known to cause allergies for anyone in the family, wait til the age of 3. If not it would be ok to let him try. Make sure to get all bones out. Happy Birthday!
