First Veggie Disaster :(

My almost 6 month old is breastfed and about 8oz a day supplemented with formula. She's been eatting rice cereal and oatmeal after boobies for about a month now. She finished about a 1/2 hour of breastfeeding then we sat down for her rice. She had about 6 spoonfuls of that when I gave her her first taste of carrots. She seemed confused but seemed liked she liked it. Just as I was gloating to my Hubby about how well she was doing, everything came out of her. She had about 5 spoonfuls of the carrots before it ended up everywhere. She has spit up probally 6 times total since she was born so to see this is very scary for me. She was acting fine after, laughing smiling, looking at me like what's wrong with you mom, so I knew she was ok. My mom said I overstuffed her. Hubby said she's not ready yet. Mother in law said too many differant foods at once. Now I'm afraid to try them again. What do you moms think happened?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First let me say how grateful I am that I found this site! You all made me see what I was doing wrong thank you thank you thank you! Leah successfully ate some green beans tonight! I did boobies, waited 45 min then gave her just the beans and she loved them! Even cried for some more :). I'm so glad to know it was just the overflow valve :). Love you all! Thanks again.

I agree with many of the previous posters, I think you may have overfed her. And don't feel bad, I've done that, too. My oldest still talks about the time over a year ago that I overfed my younger daughter on peas and cereal and she threw up! Keep trying with the carrots and other foods, but remember that at this age it is more important for her to have the breastmilk so don't rush the solids. She's still getting most of her nutrition from the milk so ease into the veggies and other foods. I also had great success mixing the veggies in with the rice cereal that my kids loved.

Hello,
I would also go with your moms answer. A half hour of breast feeding and then food is a lot. Maybe you can try the food first (small amounts in the beginning). After that, if she is still hungry, she can nurse or have a bottle. I did this with my kids, and it worked great. They seem to have a better idea when to stop with the liquids, so I always did food first. good luck!

I think you might have over fed her just a bit. I usually wait about an hour after nursing to give food. That way she has made some room in her tummy. I usually BF about 6:30am, then give cereal about 8am. I BF again after her nap about 11am then give fruit (sometimes mixed with cereal) at about 12pm. I will usually BF on and off for the rest of the afternoon but not give anymore food until about 6:30 which is usually veggies and fruit. She nurses again at 8pm for the night. Hope that helps

They say it takes about 10 tries before baby takes to food. My 7mo daugh nurses in the morning and at night, then i feed her about 3x a day. I started with plain rice cereal, and she threw that up, then i just took cues from her. They know when thier little bellies are full, especially breastfed babies. I would just give her 3 spoonfulls then wait an hour and see how she does and give her time to digest, then try again little by little. Good luck !!

Swallowing food requires different tongue movements than swallowing liquids, espeially breast milk. This is something they can only learn through practice. There will be spitting up in the beginning. As time passes it will lessen. There is also the possibility that she ate too much as well. I would recommend trying the solid foods halfway between breast feeding session. Ex. if you breast feed at 10 am and again at 1 pm, then offer her solids around 12 noon. This way her stomach is not completely full, but it is also not so empty that she is too hungry to concentrate. Learning to eat takes thought & patience on her part.
Finally, of all the first foods I found carrots (& meats) to be pretty gross. I tried all the foods I fed my boys. The carrots are very grainy & have a very strong taste. Neither of my boys liked it either. My oldest now loves carrots (my youngest is still on jarred food) so its really not an indication of future eating habits. I recommend starting with sweet potatoes, butternut squash, apples or bananas. They all have nice textures and sweet, mild flavors.
good luck & don't give up!

I think it's just her built-in "overflow valve"! LOL
I agree w/ the PP, just try a veggie by itself after her milk. Good luck!

Hi R., Try offering the new food item at lunch or dinner time instead of right after breakfast. If your daughter was laughing & fine then you need to take a breath! Kids can throw-up for the darnest reasons. Hang in there and keep calm! Best wishes.

She might have had a little too much to eat. If she is acting fine and there are no other spit ups, then it is just her way of regulating her intake :)
The carrots are a pretty neutral food, they shouldn't be upsetting for her, that is why I don't think it's because you gave her too many different foods.
Try again in a couple of days may be just with carrots, no cereal and see how she likes it!

Sounds like it could be any of the above answers, or none of them. Babies take some time to adjust to new flavors and foods. Research shows that most people need 14-20 exposures to a food before they really like it. Just keep trying :) Neither of my kids liked the cereal and those first veggies very much. To help, I mixed the two together. If she's eating cereal well (you can move to oatmeal if she's not loving rice cereal) you can start by putting 3-4 baby spoons of veggie into the oatmeal and giving it that way. It was a nice transition for us. My younger daughter is now 7 mo. and eats everything in sight--yogurt, all baby foods, real fruit cut up, even some meat. Your daughter will get there too! Good luck :)

Yes, she was too full. Their stomachs are quite small, and that must breastmilk followed by that much food is just too much at one time. Give her a small amount of food next time, then let her nurse after.

Hi R.,

I also breastfed my daughter, and the same thing happened when I first gave her formula. She ate it up, and within 20 minutes, my husband was wearing all four ounces of it.

My doctor said that as far as foods, babies do not need anything nutrionally except milk/formula until they are one. Moms are always pushing the issue - "Oh, MY daughter ate food at four months old!" etc, etc. The facts are that most babies' digestive systems are not ready for fruits and veggies until 12 months or older.

No worries - your baby is just fine - and, No, you did not overfeed her. Babies stop eating when they are full.

Good luck,
L.

I agree with the other Moms. It sounds like she might have had a little too much to eat all at once. I used to breastfeed my son, wait about 15 - 20 minutes and then mix some veggies in with his rice at first. She's ready, probably just too full : ) Good luck. This is the fun part!

You over stuffed her!!!!! Think about it her little belly had breast milk, rice cereal, and then carrots. You said she was nursing for 1/2 hour so that may have been enough for her for at least 2 hours. Until you get the hang of how much your daughter eat try giving her formula with her food so you will see how many ounces she is getting so she wont be so full. If anything was wrong with you daughter she would have let you know. The way you feed your daughter is what I have done with my 2 daughter and this is what I will do with my 5 month old. I give them breast milk at 5 months I give cereal and then about 6 months I give a veggie. I give a one veggie for 5 days to watch our for any allergic reactions and then I add on another veggie then a fruit. You are not doing anything wrong!!! If you are still not sure call her doctor!!

I would either do the carrots or the cereal not both. another option is to mix half carrots with 1/2 rice cereal and give her 5 or six spoonfuls and see how she does.
When I introduced my son to fruits and veggies I did the veggies or fruit for a few days and sometimes rice with it. I would only do one fruit or veggie for a few days to make sure he did not have an allergic reaction to it. Around 4-6 six months is the right age to start with fruits and veggies.
Good luck. You will figure it out together.
