My 15 week old daughter has potnasel drip and is coughing alot on flem. She has been like this for 9 days. The doctors say I can not give her anything we just need to ride it out. Neither one of us is getting any sleep. She use to sleep for 10 hours at a time. Do you have any suggestions please.

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

My son used to get terrible colds like that too. I tried elevating his bed and still didn't work for us. I actually had to put him in my bed and let him lay in my arms which actually held his head up higher than if I elevated his bed. He slept so much better and so did we. I also gave him tylenol too to help open the passages. Have you also tried saline for her nose and then suctioning it out? Sounds gross, but it helps them greatly. I also used a humidifier even during the day and kept it wherever he was sitting. It's a long process, but this worked for us every time he was sick.

I hope she feels better soon.

K.

Oh my Dear! I hate to tell you this but there is more of this & worse to come! This is only the beginning. But I know it is hard to watch your little one be sick. Here is what works great for my son. He has had many colds in his short little life.

Get a cool mist humidifier for her room, buy baby vick's vapo rub (yes they finally now make it for little ones). Just check to see if there is an age recommendation I am not sure if 15 weeks is too young or not. I am sure your significant other has to get up early for work so you & the baby should try sleeping either in the baby's room or the living room.
My son was a poor sleeper at 15 weeks so you should consider yourself lucky she is sleeping 10 hours a night (when she is not sick). I was very sleep deprived for 3 months of his life got maybe 1 hr a sleep at night & napped as much as I could during the day got maybe 3 hrs of sleep a day.
So I know it stinks not getting sleep but her cold will eventually go away & sleep will get back to normal. Hang in there mama it will get better!

I know it's really hot for socks right now, but putting vicks on the bottom of the feet at night & then putting socks over them will help. A cool mist humidifier will help too. If she's in a crib try putting a book under her mattress to elevate her head, or if in the bassinet still you could put something under the little pad in that too. Have you given her some tylenol at night to make her more comfortable? I have an 11 year old and I also have a 9 months old so I have been through this as well. Hopefully she wont end up with an ear infection after it's all said & done....Keep her upright as much as possible during the day...good luck !

The things that worked for us was rolling up some baby blankets and propping up one end of the crib mattress (they also sell wedges for this purpose, but the blankets work just as well). We also have had to put their swing in the bathroom with a hot shower going. I think the mixture of the steam and the sound of the shower would knock them out. I would catch a cat nap on the floor next to them. Good Luck!

Have you elevated one side of her crib? If she is laying flat it may be hard for the post nasal drip to drain. You can put a book (or a few) under one end of the mattress - not under the crib legs because of risk of falling, but under one end of the mattress. This will elevate her enough to help her drain. Hope that helps.

I went through the same thing. I would try any or all of these strategies: saline spray or drops with a suction, elevate one side of the crib, cool mist humidifier and tylenol.
Good luck!
