I'm a first time mom and I will honestly say I always freak out yes yes I'm one of those people! Anyhow at 3 month my daughter got pneumonia it was terrible there weren't really any signs just a sudden horrible fever. She is now 11 months and has had a snotty nose and a little rattley cough for about a week dr says it's just a cold that it will pass. Just today however she started breathing rapidly which they say is a sign. No fever, acting normal, eating, laughing , playing. I have a breathing machine as well as albuterol so I gave her a treatment. I just wNt another moms advice on wether I'm freaking for no reason or is it just cause? Oh and our doctor won't be in till Monday so didn't know if a er trip is in my future?

What can I do next?

I think that if you already have experience with pneumonia and your daughter needs breathing treatments, then you should watch her closely. Check your "list" of signs to watch for, every dr has them. I sincerely think that you should never feel stupid or like you're overreacting when it's your child's breathing!

You should also be able to call your drs service to speak with a physician. More often than not, they'll tell you to go get it checked out.

Personally, I'd consider switching to a dr who has evening and weekend hrs too. I don't think MOST kids have breathing problems so young. So for you, it's more important to have someone who's going to be available more than 9-5 M-F.

You might consider going to an urgent care center if needbe, instead of an ER. Urgent care should be able to treat and release her during the daytime hours. While the ER would only be when no one else is available or it's a crisis situation.

Since it's cold and flu season, you're likely in store for lots of colds/viruses and run ins with bacterial infections, like strep...most of which are highly contagious. It's just part of life.

As a Mommy, just try to remain calm and sensible. Watch your daughter's symptoms, check her temp and mind her breathing. What she has now may just be a cold. But colds can turn into earaches, sinus infections, etc. Just know what to watch for and when you need to get help.

Best wishes

My dd will be 3 in Jan. has had it 3 times. Once every winter and the first time she was also 3 months. Every time she didn't seem that ill. A low grade fever, not a runny nose. It was the cough that made me bring her into the doctor. The 2nd and 3rd the doctors didn't think she was that sick either, but I pushed it and she had and xray showing the pneumonia. This is her 4th winter and she hasn't has it yet, but that cough started at the being of Oct. and we have been giving her puffer. So thats my dd back ground. So yes, you have a reason to be freaking out. If she has a hard time breathing don't wait until Monday take her to Urgent Care. What I would do to help my dd breath, turn on the shower hot and sit in the bathroom for about 45 mins. See if can not let her sleep laying flat. It is going to be a long weekend for you. Take care of your little girl, I've been there. I will be thinking of you.

It is tough when our little ones get sick. All I can say is be careful. My daughter has health issues today I believe because she was on antibiotics too often when she was young. She is now almost 16 and has immune system issues. I would find a doctor you really trust and have her tested when she is healthy to see if she has any underlyng issues.

My son had pneumonia at 11 months old and was hospitalized. It came on very quickly. It began with him not waking up that morning. I had to get him out of his crib at 11am. Then he wouldnt drink and kept falling asleep. In other words he was totally lethargic. He was hot as could be and had a very rapid pulse (200bpm). I called the nurse hotline and they told me to bring him into the ER. He was immediately admitted and it took him to nights in the hospital to be nursed back to health. It doesnt sound like your daughter has all the symptoms but if your mom instincts are going off I would keep a close eye on temperature and behavior and if either change, take her in.

my oldest has had pnuemonia multiple times and his temp was only 99-100 and he was his normal happy self. If my child did not have asthma I would go straight to the er for rapid breathing, labored breathing, or tugging but since he does have it I always treat w/ albuterol first. Did she improve after the albuterol? If she did the cold may just be causing her breathing issues to flare.
