We are planning a 7-hour drive to Lincoln, NE this weekend. I'd LIKE to do it in one day, there and back if possible, it's not for vacation or anything. That would be 14 hours in the car though, which sounds like a lot. Our baby hasn't been in the car for longer than 1.5 hours, tops. I'm trying to "plan" how long it will take us. I have absolutely NO experience in road trips with babies! Do you just stop every couple hours to nurse/change him, get him out of the car seat, etc. ? Is it reasonable to try to drive that much in one day with a baby or should be stay overnight in Lincoln? Thanks for your advice moms!

What can I do next?

It is not reasonable. It can be done. If you really need to bring baby along, then plan on it taking much longer than 7 hours each way. You cannot nurse while driving and he has to get out and move around a bit every couple of hours.
The best solution, if you don't have to bring him along is to find someone who can watch him for that day and overnight -- then he will be able to play and have fun and you can do the marathon road trip.
Good luck!

We drive from CO to MN every summer (1000 miles) straight through. We started when our daughter was 6 months old and she is now 5 1/2. We always stop on the way home over night in Kearney, NE. We leave by 4am and stop for an early and relaxing lunch at a great park in Kearney (I pack lunch) and let her play. When she was a baby we still let her play, just not quite as long. These days we stop for almost an hour. We don't get into our destination in MN until about 10:00pm and of course we are all pretty wired so it's still an hour+ till we're all in bed, but it's worth it to me. When she was a baby we stopped every 2-3 hours for nursing and changing and stretching. Like other said, follow the signs your baby gives you and see how the first 7 hours go and then make your decision.
Good luck and keep it low stress! :)

I've done the east coast from NH to NC several times with my daughter, She was 8 months old the first time. I always stop overnight, but it is always just me driving, so I didn't want to do it all in one shot. Plus I like to stay in hotels :)

I would try to stay overnight. Last year I drove with my kids straight through from MN to CO. It took about 14 hours. It was crazy.
On the way out I stopped in NE and then continued on. On the way back I thought I was superwoman. We would stop about every 3 or 4 hours to eat/bathroom breaks. We were all very looney by the time we reached home. It was too much time watching corn fields go by.

I did an 11 hour drive with my 4 month old, and he slept a lot of the time. We left at 4am and only had to make 2 stops. Of course, your baby is older, might not sleep as long, and every baby is different. If there were a few hours in between each 7 hour stretches, I'd consider doing it in one day, but also keep the option for staying the night, depending on how the drive there went.

With 4 kids of my own and many road trips under our belts, I am going to strongly urge you not to try to do 14 hours in one day. You may luck out and find his fine for that long, but I think that would be some sort of freak of nature. At the very least you should stay the night in Lincoln.

Here is what I keep in mind when we take a trip:
- Stopping at least every two hours is a must
- Pay attention to the signs, if they need to stop - stop
- Have a play bag of toys, books, etc.
- Have as many snacks (age appropriate of course) that you can think of
- LET THE BABY DIRECT YOU - it is not worth it to try to make them fit your mold - BELIEVE ME

We just took all four of our kids on a 7 hour trip to Wamego, KS a couple weeks ago (ages 11, 5, 3, and 6mo) and we just put them in bed the night before in their clothes for the next day. We packed the car the night before, let them all stay up late, got up at 4am the next morning and off we went. We had been driving for nearly 5 hours before one even got up. When they got up, I had breakfast ready for them and they made it the rest of the way in with only one stop for pottying. I nurse the baby but she will take a bottle so we didn't have to stop and nurse her.

I say leare real early in the morning, get there, do your thing, stay the night and drive back early the next morning.

Good luck!
