The doctor should know and maybe prescribe a lower dosage.
I gave birth in December and have just gotton my first period. I am currently on Birth control pills. Before pregnancy, my periods were short and light. Well, this first period after giving birth is SO HEAVY with cramping and bloating. I just was wondering if anyone else experienced this same "first period" and how long it lasted. Does your next period become more normal?

Hi S.,
My first period post childbirth was awful, and from what I have heard that is pretty common. I think it got a bit better with each period for about 8-9 months and since then it has actually been a bit better than pre-pregnancy. My ob said that it takes about 18 months for your body to really be back to pre-pregnancy condition, and I definitely found that to be true.
I am a mother of a two year old. I too used to have light and short periods, but since having my son they too have gotten heavy, longer and more painful. I have yet to get used to them. But don't get too scared, I know of mothers that have gone right back to their, "before children" periods and weight.
Hi S.,
I gave birth in Oct. Before preg, my periods were also short and light. My first period was also heavy with lots of bloating. It lasted for a whole month, right through my second period. It would get light, almost gone, and then return heavy again. My third month was much more like it used to be before preg. It lasted 5 days, not the usual 3 to 4, but still much better than lasting a whole month. I still have my 4th month to go, but I expect that it will be a much more normal 28 days and not last that long too. Hang in there.
Hey S., I had the same thing - REALLY heavy and awful after my son was born, and it stayed heavier for awhile, but after several months (5-6?)it was much more manageable. It's still heavier than before I had him (he's 9 now), but not uncomfortable and excessive like right after he was born.-S. H.
Pre pregnancy my periods varied anywhere from 28-37 days. Now they are exactly every 31 days every single month and it is definitely heavier. Some months are not that bad some months it is extremely heavy. I haven't had much difference in bloating and cramping though.
Hi,
My periods became 9 days long and really heavy after having my first daughter. They got worse after my second daughter. I had 2 c-sections and wondered if that was part of the cause. I was told by my OBGYN if I went back on birth control pills it would help the situation. I haven't decided to go that route until we're sure we're not going to have a third. I've talked to others who have had similar issues. See how the next peiod goes. Good Luck!
