M.D.
I would just keep trying. Thats the fun part of the whole learning process for a baby is having them make a mess. I would keep doing what you are doing.
My daughter is 4 months old and her MD said to start her on her first food soon. I tried rice cereal, 1 tablespoon with 5 ounces of formula on a spoon. Of course, she smiled at me, and it went everywhere. Should we try it in her bottle first?
Thank you for your help! My daughter is doing much better on the spoons now, she gets really messy, but it makes for great pictures!

I wouldn't put it in a bottle. You have to remember that she has to get the tongue movement down to learn how to move the food to the back of her throat. It's going to be messy at first, but she'll get it soon. Just keep using the spoon. If you put it in a bottle you have to ruin the nipples because the cereal doesn't fit through the holes that are in them as they are, and they get clogged so you have to make the holes bigger. Then forget about using them for anything else. She also may get use to receiving her food this way and won't except the cereal any other way (kids can be weird like that). Keep using the spoon.
Hi there....
APA and most pedis will tell you NOT to put the cereal into a bottle (as will Gerber's 24 hr hotline and the RI Warmline) for 2 reasons: there is a chance they could choke and they need to start practicing using a spoon.
Back in the day most parents put the cereal in the bottle and many still do and all turned out OK but it is not recommended.
Hope this helps!
we started out making it real thin, 1tbsp of cereal to 5tbsp of formula... but my dd liked it thicker... eventually I just made it the right consistency and stopped measuring. In my opinion it should be thick enough to stay on the spoon, but thin enough to swallow
i would keep up with the spoon but i would make her cereal thicker i would make it just a little thinner the applesauce at first.
if you formula feed a good way to make it is to use a scoop from the formula
at 1st try half a scoop of cereal with like 2oz of formmula

My son started at 4 months with food. We started him on the rice cereal also. I let him make a huge mess to start with and just had fun with it. It has been maybe about 6 or 7 weeks now that he is on solds and has gotten the hang of it. I made it really thin at first then tried it a big thicker and that ended up working well because he could actually swallow it. He like oatmeal the best. We do give him cereal in his bottle now that he is older and eating it. At night if he will not eat his cereal I just transfer a bit to the bottle.
I would say just have fun with it and let them get use to it even it is messy. My son is not messy now and loves to eat solids. He ate 2 jars tonight for his first time.
I put cereal in my 8 mo old daughter Molly's bottle for first feeding everyday, due to our morning schedule. I don't see any problem with putting cereal in a bottle and tring spoons and cereal in afternoon and dinner, i used to mix a little fruit in as well to sweeten it up. Baby will get used to spoons if you just keep encouraging it, and keep a towel and wipes handy!!!
Hi i am a mother of a 9 year old and a 14th month and both of my girls did the same thing...but the cereal in the bottle made them very gassy and uncomfortable..keep trying the spoon..mix the cereal with a little applesauce that worked for me.
i started my daughter on solids at around 4 months, and my doctor recommended NOT putting it in the bottle, so that she got used to using the spoon. of course it was a messy venture at first but now at 6 months she eats level 2 foods like a champ!
