I'm in the same boat and I'm going to Houston Catholic today to look for gifts. So my advice would be to go to a religious store and see what they have. (:

If you shop at a Catholic store you will find plenty. If it's family I usually check with the mom and ask what they would need. That way there are
no duplicates. Examples: Rosary, bible, cross, etc...
If it's a friend, I would do a nice cross necklace, trinket box, engraved picture frame, etc.... Another great place is Things Remembered.
Good luck!

I am not Catholic, but my best friend is. (I say that because I don't know if certain things are supposed to be given by certain people; her sister was the Godmother, but my Mom was asked to make the dress, etc.) I gave her daughter a Blue Sky Clayworks rosary and some money to start a 529 plan.

(Here is a link to a similar rosary on eBay, since they are hard to find in stores outside of CA: http://cgi.ebay.com/SALE-CHILDS-NOAHS-ROSARY-CLAYWORKS-BL...

It was different from the traditional rosary, since it is fairly whimsical, which I thought made it perfect for a child.

Unless the child is really close, such as a godchild, etc. I usually just give them a card with money in it. The family usually takes care of the dress, jewelry (cruxifix necklace), bible, etc. Just let them know you are proud of them and give them your congratulations!

how good of a friend? A card is always appropriate. A bookmark enclosed works well and anything over that is up to you.
I've made the dress, given Rosaries to each of my good friends children. I helped make the veil for another good friend. The others we've known about, have gotten a card, as we aren't 'that' close.
Yes, this is a big deal for this child and their religious life, but being there is the ultimate gift...anything else is gravy. Some great suggestions below if you still feel the need to give a gift. Precious Moments has a couple of perfect First Communion figurines that run $20-30.00.

Things Remembered has some really cute stuff. I've gotten crosses with their name engraved on them before. But, they have quite a bit to choose from. Check them out online or at Coastal Grande Mall.
