my one year old was scared of some fireworks that were on the sidewalk last night. Tonight we are going to the downtown fireworks. Any suggestions on how to make it work?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up going to a park that doesn't allow home fireworks or sparklers. We got there early so he could get used to it. He sat and played during the whole thing and we were able to enjoy them.

You might have to watch them from far away or in a car or building. My 17 month old watched them from in the enclosed porch and was fine, but wanted nothing to do with watching them outside! It is too loud and unpredictable for them to watch up close.

Ummmm... don't go? I'm not trying to be a party pooper, but seriously why go if it doesn't look, like your baby will enjoy it? It's probably crowded getting in and out of there, late at night, and bound to be some of those super loud "bombs' they insist on shooting off.

My kids were 4 1/2 and 6 before they really liked a fireworks show. And that was at a large park pretty far away. You have lots of years to take your little one to these.

I would stay home. If he is scared it is not fair to him. He is only a baby.

He is going to be scared.
At this age, it is very loud, for a child's ears.
For some people, the noise alone is just unbearable.
My Daughter is sensitive to loud noises.
I don't think, your child is going to enjoy it at all.
Best to leave him home.

Even with ear plugs, a child that young will not leave it in their ears.

If you want to go to the fireworks....get a sitter. I know a family who has an older child (much older) who can not be around fireworks. Some people have phobias about certain things that do not change with age.

Blessings....

Find a place several blocks away and park. Let her see them from a distance from the car and avoid the large crowd noise and scare. We like to avoid the crowds so we always go somewhere we can see but not be near all the other people. There are usually a few othes but not thousands. We take chairs and sit out on the sidewalk or parking lot and have snacks. Its always fun and so much easier than trying to get out of a parking lot at 11pm when 10,000 others want to do the same. She may be too tired anyway if she was up late last night.

I would try it, but be prepared to leave if he freaks out. He's got plenty of time to enjoy stuff like that.

Have fun!

My kids are 6 and 4 and even last year they both sat there terrified with their ears covered. We were pretty far away too. We are going to the same place this year but I plan to take them inside the house and pop in a movie if they are still uncomfortable.

Last year my daughter was not happy at a show we went to, she didn't like the noise. The next night we went to a different show, prepared to leave if needed, and she was fine with some ear protection head phones on. They can be found at a sporting goods store, near the gun equipment.
