Hi S.,
You probably already know this, but the local firemen will come out and show your children how to use the ladder so they will be confident if they ever have to use it for real.

My parents got one at Sams Club that mounts to the wall. I don't know the specifics but my mom did research on it and felt it was a good deal and rated well for safety. Just a suggestion of where to look.

We have a ladder called Saf-Escape, which fits over the window sill and has a ladder of chains that hangs down to the ground. Both Kidde (the maker of fire extinguishers) and First Alert have similar ladders that have nylon straps and no-slip steps instead of chains, which, in my opinion, would probably be easier for a child to use. They all support about 1000 lbs, allowing more than one person to use the ladder at a time. I know that Amazon sells both of them for $35-40 with free shipping. I have also seen the First Alert ladder at Walmart. I think the First Alert may have certain window sill requirements, and the Kidde ladder does not.
Hope this is helpful.

Have you called your local fire department and asked them about where to get a good one as well as what are the requirements for a good one?

Portland, OR has several "safety" equipment stores that sell fire extinguishers, police related supplies, etc. It's been years since I've been to one but I strongly suspect that they would have such ladders as well as information to help you decide which one is best. Try looking in the yellow pages under safety or fire extinguishers.

Also, look online. Look it up on the magazine, Consumer Reports. I think that their web site has a way to be a short term member so that you have access to their ratings and info.
