Hope someone out there can help me. Had a little "incident" over the weekend...ended up barbecuing more than our food! House interior is ok, except gaping hole in ceiling from water damage. My biggest problem is getting the smell of smoke out of everything. Just washed some towels, and they still stink. Am I going to have to toss everything out, or does anyone have any tips on removing the smell....detergents to use etc.
Don't want to go around smelling like a campfire!!
For laundry, try adding baking soda or washing soda (by Arm & Hammer.) Jewel sells this in a yellow/orange box in the washing powders section (it is on the top shelf and kind of hard to see at ours.) Walmart sells big boxes of regular soda to add.
(Don't put in vinegar if you're putting in the soda- it will foam!)

Hello, try using vinegar in the wash to remove the smell. Add a cup to your laundry, also a good detergent is Tide with Febreeze. Odo ban is a great deoderizer and disinfectant, it can also be added to the laundry. Best of luck.
I agree - contact your insurance company. And vinegar added to the laundry is the only thing I've found that will take smoke smell out of clothes.
Your insurance company will pay to have everything professionally cleaned (I used to work for an ins. co). There are companies that will come out and take care of everything! If you do any cleaning yourself, keep track of your hours and costs. You can get reimbursed for this, which will help reduce your deductible.
You will probably have to have everything professionally cleaned. Your homeowners insurance should cover it. Things that cannot be cleaned will have to be replaced but that should be covered too. Some things, the smoke smell just doesn't come out of (esp. plastics). We have some friends who's house nearly burned to the ground a few years ago so that's what I'm basing my answer on.
