Fingernails Flaking and Breaking?!

I've always had super strong, long nails... the past week or so they've all broken off and they split and flake. They aren't discolored so I don't think there's any kind of infection going on, but I'm kind of bummed, I never realized how much I loved my long nails until they were gone. It's not a big deal, I just don't know why this is happening. The only thing I can think of is our change in diet... we are so broke right now :( and while I have been making sure my kids are still eating healthy, well balanced meals, I've hardly been eating much at all. (Don't get me wrong, I EAT, just not as much and not the healthy things my body is used to). I am still drinking plenty of water though... maybe I'm just being rougher on my hands than usual without realizing it?

What can I do next?

It's also winter time. This is usually when my nails have the toughest time. They are normally quite strong and resilient but just the other day I broke two and didn't even hit them hard.

I'd just trim them short and neat and let them grow back. Plenty of hand cream will help too.

Oh R.!!!

I'm sooo sorry!!! I believe it's the stress you are under!!! I think I saw that you didn't get your beauty sleep last night either! ((((HUGS!!!!)))))

I would check into the Angelsfoodnetwork.org to see if they can help you. Also don't be afraid (not the right word, but I can't think of the word I need to use!!!) to ask your church for help or friends. We all go through tough times!!!

Please know i am thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers!!!

Well, I hope it's nothing more serious, but winter, in general, can play havoc with nails (and hair!) Sometimes we lotion up our hands but forget to rub it into the nails as well. Have you tried an olive oil soak?

R., if your diet isn't quite the healthiest right now, please start taking a daily multi-vitamin!

And, since your money for groceries is small, look into http://www.angelfoodministries.com/hosts.asp to find Angel Food Ministries in your area--there are about 30 near Richmond! And there is NO income requirement for this.

stress can affect your health. If you are under a lot of stress - not getting enough sleep, etc. that can really make a difference in your health!!

I am sorry to hear you are broke. That is a VERY stressful situation. I will keep you in my prayers!!!

it could be a sign of a thyroid issue. You might ask your doc to check that out. I have hypothyroidism and the thing that finally got me to the doc for tests was I had 3 toenails fall off in a matter of 6 months.

Hope that helps!

It's definitely your diet. Could also very well likely be your stress now too. I've been through--and am going through--the same thing. Feel free to message me if you need to vent.

Fingernails as you describe them are a sign of hypothyroidism. Brittle hair, cold feet, feeling cold in general, feeling tired most of the time no matter how much sleep you get, outer edges of eyebrows thinning - these are also things that can happen when your thyroid is under performing.
As far as nutrition goes, my nails (and hair) grow fast and strong when I take 1 tbsp molasses (source of sulfur and iron), a biotin supplement and a horsetail supplement (or food grade dichotomous earth - any silica source) once daily.
