DS finally figured out that he needs to chew his food before swallowing (11 mos)! We had been doing stage 3 baby food for several months, so being able to give him actual food to feed himself at mealtimes is a big thing in our house. So far he's had cut up peaches, pears, bananas, steamed veggies, rice, shredded cheese, and noodles. If what we are eating is soft/small enough for him then I give him that, but what are some easy ideas for his dinner when ours is not baby friendly (hubby likes spicy, and i mean SPICY food)? TIA!

What can I do next?

Just put some aside BEFORE you season it :)

Chicken nuggets - just cut them up into little bite sized pieces for him.
Fish sticks/patties
I always liked the Gerber meals or a chopped up Lean Cuisine for this age. You get all kinds of variety - easy to nuke it, and it's usually pretty nutritious.

Also unless what you're making is all 1 dish - just give him the sides. Often, that's enough for him.
But, why not try him on some of the spicy stuff, just to see what he does? I discovered around that age that my daughter LOVES spicy stuff.

I am sorry, but I can not agree with Manda M. Please do not start giving your infant chicken nuggets and fish sticks! They are worthless nutritionally (half of each one is FAT..we just did this AGAIN with my USDA food training for daycare providers..the visuals are nasty! I do not serve this stuff to my kids unless I make home made chicken nuggets. Easy to do!)

But as another poster said...do your sides, or before you spicy season the foods. You will likely be surprised how quickly he can adapt now to table foods. I have a current little guy in care (hes one today!) and at about 9-10 mos I was convinced he was never going to get a bite to his own mouth! He figured it out in about 48 hours and theres been no stopping him now!

He eats everything the other kids do, just cut up smaller. For us (daycare) we have to serve a protein item, a grain and 2 fruits and/or veggies. So for lunch yesterday they had several fruits (blueberries, strawberries, apples for the big kids, and fresh pears as well), a buttered roll (babies was ripped into pieces), then they had ham. I often just buy deli ham and ask them to slice it thick (they want a number and I tell them a "10" and they always question it! LOL I tell them I will be cubing it for kids and for my quiche recipe! then they get it)

Just try any healthy food you might eat...minus the super spicy..but some spice..why not?? My daughter also loves spice and always has (shes 17 years old now). Even at 4 or 5 years old she liked things way spicier than I do!
