Hi all. My hubby and I are living paycheck to paycheck these days - and well, it is no way to live.
I do work part time, but it is not enough to make ends meet. For instance, if something comes up - like needing new tires, or like our washing machine just broke, we end up paying for such things on our credit card and just get deeper and deeper into debt. UGH.

I am looking for more work - but having to pay for childcare - I am not sure if it is worth it. I end up working for free.

My hubby tok a paycut due to the state of the economy. I feel so stuck.

Any advice on how to get out of this mess?

Thanks!

I totally understand where you're coming from. Check out the book Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. I highly recommend this for everyone, and it can totally change your perspective on your household finances. We, too, are in a ton of debt (mostly student loans and a car payment), and are struggling to keep up, and reading that book helped us a great deal.

As far as other work you could do... have you thought about babysitting? I'll be taking in a baby in the fall for some extra money. Or direct sales? My sister is kicking butt with Mary Kay, and I have other friends who do Pampered Chef, Tupperware, Avon, and the like.

This economy is putting everyone in such a tight spot. We are also living paycheck to paycheck and it is very hard. We have a 14 month old, and a baby arriving literally anyday now. It is very stressful not knowing how to pay all of the bills and get out of credit card debt. We couldn't see paying for childcare for me to work full time and bring home $100 a week it just isn't worth it. I began doing child care out of my home last August and it doesn't make great money but it is enough to make ends meet. Plus I get to still stay home with my kids which is what is important. In NH you do not have to be licensed unless you care for more than 3 children, which means you can have your own children plus 3 others. It has worked for us so far and I feel like I am contributing.

Hi I.,

That's a tough situation to be in. A friend of mine just started a new home-based business to help SAHM start a home-based business. She had her own software development company but wanted something different. When her three children were young, she trained them not to bother her for everything so she could get work done. They know she's home, but she's at work. Perhaps she can help you. Check her out kim(at)cereous(dot)com
