Dear Mommas,
When we were abroad my son contracted Fifth Disease. It has been over a week now. QUestions;
How long should the rash on his cheeks last? Is it normal that they sort of come and go. Some days his whole cheek is bright angry red and some days just one or two large areas???? We are home now so are going to our normal doctor soon, but just curious. The more I am a mom, the more I realize doctors are great, but sometimes mom know better :)

My little one had it when she was around 9-10 months old. It started as little white marks inside of her cheeks, then she got that flushed look on her cheeks and eventually had bright red, rough and chapped lips. We went to the DR who gave us some meds and I believe it lasted for a few weeks. She hasn't had it since but it is HIGHLY contagious!

Both our girls got in at the same time when they were 1 and 4. It lasted a bit over 2 weeks for us. Just a little FYI.....if you didn't get it as a child you can get it as well. I didn't get the rash, but I got terrible body and joint aches for months. I went to a rheumatologist and he tested me for all sorts of things and when he found out that our kids had recently had fifths disease he tested me to see if I had the antibodies. I didn't. I never had fifths disease as a kid and when you get it as an adult it manifests itself as arthritic symptoms. It took forever, months, to get over it.

My daughter only had it for a few days, but she gets over most stuff really quick. Did he at any time have spots in his mouth? White spots?
When my daughter got the rash this was the first thing I checked since it is similar to measles. Measles has a higher fever with spots in the mouth. I would think that it should only last about a week, maybe he has something else. Only a blood test could tell what exactly he has been exposed to.

If I remember correctly it comes and goes for about a week and a half. It's no big deal just stay home.
