My twin boys' fifth birthday is coming up. I thought I had planned really well by reserving that date at a local family farm well in advance. There will be animals there, ponies and a train that gives rides. I am planning to keep the food low key because it is in the afternoon and the setting is so great there is no need to have a lot. I thought I wouldn't need to choose a theme either, except now I am sweating it because I need to order a cake and get party supplies! The place I like to order cakes from has some cool decorative schemes, including dinos, Toy Story, that kind of thing. Were not going too crazy with decorations but I'm trying to figure out the cake. Should I pick a theme or just have them do something simple? I can't figure this out. It is the fifth birthday so I want the cake to look really nice, but it doesn't necessarily have to have a certain theme. It almost feels like any theme would "clash" with the surroundings, other than maybe cowboys, or trains. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the great ideas! They picked a train cake. I wanted a vintage train that was similar to the one at the farm but they out a colorful modern train on instead which was fine. We did primary colors for plates and napkins so to keep it simple. Then, on their actual birthday a few days later we got a Cold Stone Creamery ice cream cake with a vintage train on it for the family.
I agree with the others. Toy Story seems to fit perfectly! Just have it be Woody, Jessie and Bullseye to keep it all together. If not Toy Story, stick with some type of barnyard theme. Good luck!
What do the boys want? My daughter couldn't decide for her 5th birthday so we did an X-Men/My Little Pony theme. (sure, it looked like Wolverine was attacking the ponies, but he was totally their ally!)
I always let my dd pick out her cake...can you take your twins and let them look at pictures to choose one? Surely they'll have something they want. My dd just turned 5 and I had a blast with it. She had trouble picking a "theme" so we went with a "favorite things" bday party and had a mixture. Then she didn't really want a cake, but an ice cream bar so we had the classic ice cream flavors and lots of toppings and then I made cupcakes and she chose the flavor, icing and sprinkles to put on top. Her goodie bags were some of her favorites as well so we had nail polish, soccer ball shaped chocolates, etc...things she would choose. My point is don't worry whether if it will all go or not. Your celebrating your kids so make it about them whether it makes sense or not. They'll have a blast! Truly, this was the most fun I've had planning for a party and implementing b/c it really was all about my dd and it was something we sort of did together...except the decorating. I went in advance to do that so she'd be surprised. :o) Have fun!
If they like Woody from Toy Story, that could work. Woody, Jessie and Bullseye would fit right in. You could have checkered napkins or just do blue, red and yellow decorations.
Well, Toy Story, with Woody as the feature, would fit in with the western theme...... just skip Buzz Lightyear!
I decorate cakes as a side business. A lot of people in your situation go with a color theme instead of characters. So choose the boys' favorite colors and go with that. Even if they technically don't match, it will look really cute for a birthday party.
I just had my B/G twins 5th party last weekend. I was trying to figure out what to do on the cake also. Have 2? etc but I also wanted quality cake that would not be too expensive so I bought a Costco cake, had them just write a birthday message in the middle then I bought Disney princess and firetruck figures and decorated on 1/2 each theme and they loved it! I know the years of sharing a party and cake will end but I found this to work for us. Soon, it will be splitting weekends probably from what I hear from other twin parents to do different parties but as long as they don't mind sharing (which they don't) I will continue this way. We has 15 kids and parents and I still had to send home cake since.
How about just a farm animal theme on the cake? That seems like it would be the natural choice considering where you're having it. And then get some decorations in colors that match.
If the cake shop doesn't do a farm theme, you can improvise, by getting a bag of plastic figurines from the toy store and putting them on the cake. brown, green blue frosting would be in keeping with the theme.
Another choice is to go for white frosting, and Red lettering and piping, kind of country/ barn colors. Medium or even large plastic figures would look good on that. I am picturing a medium sized cow reclining, and one or two grazing.
I would keep the cake simple. How about something like writing w/icing both of their names with a # 5 candle on each side. The frosting could be White or Brown with their names being in red and white or red and blue. I think have white/red checkered table cloths would cover the country theme. I would just buy white napkins and red solo cups. Maybe for the plates, you can find something that says Happy Birthday in some fun colors or go w/Toy Story plates. It will probably be more economical the simpler you keep it. I'm sure you are paying plenty for everything else. Most of all-have fun-Your twins are 5-Yeah!
Let the boys pick! At my son's fifth (which was combined with my other son's second), we had transformers, Mickey mouse, cars, and dirt bikes. It was all stuff they like and it made it a better party for them.
How about letting the boys pick which they'd like. Take them and let them look at the designs etc. My daughter picks her cake design every year.
