Hello - I know this isnt a "mom" question, but I am at a loss and am wondering if anyone else has had any problems similar to mine.
First of all a little history - I was in a car accident when I was 18 (I am now 33) after seeing tons of doctors for the back pain, they diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia. I have tried about everything from muscle relaxers to pain pills. For the last 10 years I have been "dealing" with the pain prescription free (more so because I hated all the side effects that came with all the different pills).
Within the last 3 weeks I have had one major muscle spasm, and dozens of smaller ones. I have been in tons of pain, and am scared of doing too much because I know that I will end up in bed until my back decides to "settle down".
My question is - does anyone out there have this "syndrome" and have you had any success with any of the newest and latest drugs out there. I am desperate to try and better regulate my back issues. I have a Dr. aptointment today, but wanted some advice from anyone who has dealt with this.
Thank you in advance for all your help!!!
Hi J., I don't have these symtoms but just had a suggestion. I am so sorry that you have been in so much pain for so long. It sounds like you don't always care for the drugs you are given. I would suggest a chiropractor. It would be a great drug free alternative. I have had my concerns about chiropractic care but since seeing one i have been pain free (migraines). I can count on one hand how many migraines i have had since i started seeing my chiropractor. It has been awesome!!!! And i love not having to take a bunch of pain meds. Good Luck!

was diagnosed with this about 11 years ago, given 6 mo. to live and by aggressively dealing with my issues, am pretty symptom free today.
for me, it was a spiritual issue and although this site is not for everyone, there is a free online conference (www.beinhealth.com)with pastor henry wright that speaks on the roots of this particular issue. once there, go to conference section and then there is a watch online box on the lower right hand side if you are interested.

I would suggest chiropractic care but you would need to find a chiropractor that will be gentle with you. Also I understand that Magnesium malate and Magnesium Glycinate are also helpful for fibromyalgia.

Hi J., I work at a natural health clinic. I am a massage therapist and work with people with fibromyalgia. Many people have chronic inflammation in their body and don't even know it. My advice is to seek a natural medicine doctor. Go see a Kinesiologist/chiropractor/Acupuncturist. Someone that has all three degrees would be best. They can do wonders for your condition. Make sure to get a referral from a friend or try and find someone that's been doing this for over 10 years. Many insurance companies will cover this. In the meantime try taking a product called "CALM" or something like it. It is simply powdered magnesium.....you drink it with hot water(like a tea) 2 times a day. I take this for my heart erythmia and it helps instantly. Magnesium is a muscle relaxer and may help those spasms. These are my suggestions before you start pumping yourself with pills.
Really look into the inflammation angle......I hear it from the doctors all the time. B.

I was diagnosed with Fibro many years ago. For me, massage helps when I am hurting the most. Thankfully I don't get any headaches, but my back gets those nasty little spasms alot. Other things that help me relieve symptons are, hot showers, cold packs (for any inflammation), electrical stimulation and massage. I also try to rest when I am experiencing bad flare ups. I can go months with only minimal symptoms, so life is good and that is when I try to be more active, exercise, etc. During a flare up, I alternate Ibuprofen, tylenol & pain pills. I take alot more hot showers and dh will massage my sore areas and that helps me alot. I need a soft bed or my sides/hips are miserable--we bought a sleep number bed, which has helped, too. For the research I have done, everyone reacts so differently with the problems and treatments, so you just need to keep trying to find what works for you. Hang in there. you can email me privately if you want to. ____@____.com

Have you tried Lyrica yet? My daughter like you has had severe back problems/ pain for 8-9 yrs. She also quit taking any kinds of meds due to the fact she felt drs where just medicating rather then treating. She did get trigger point injections with some relief until she was in a car accident that made her back MUCH MUCH worse with constant pain. 4 months after the accident the pain hit her hip and leg. After going to ER once and being accused of being a "naracotic addict looking for a fix" and sent home saying nothing was wrong with her she got much sicker to the point she actually lost 4-5 days. Finally a doctor hit on the complete syptoms and she was sent back to the ER with a very high white count. 3 surgeries, 5 days in ICU and 12 days in hosptital later the bacterial menigitis she had was cured. On the bad side she had to drop out of college for the semester and was in a lot of pain from the back and hip surgeries (she had a total of 5 abcesses drained on back and hip)On the bright side the pain is now LESS then before the car accident. So now for the most part unless the pain is real bad she takes nothing.
Lyrica is suppose to be the new Fibro drug. Although I also have the disease I too take nothing most of the time.

Hi, I also was dianosed with Fibrymyalgia. For about two years I was in denial about it. Then I went to a support group meeting for it, and after listening for a while.. I knew I actually had it. I left the meeting frustrated and never went back because it seemed to be more about whining about it, then actually coming up with problem solving. I have heard good things about the new drug for it.. starts with an L.. I have not taken it because when I read the side effects I just was not willing to try it. I could change my mind someday.. also its fairly expensive. It will really help you to go see a rheumatologist.. sp... What I take per the Drs. orders is flexuril... only I cut them up and take only a fourth of one pill.. else they will knock me out and make me feel super drugged the next day.. I take a lot of ibprofen when it is not horrible, but just icky. What I also know too is that the lllness strikes mostly intelligent women in their thirties. It also goes in waves of how bad it is.. sometimes I am nearly symptom free.. other times I have to stretch my legs in the morning in order to be able to bend them. I hope this is helpful. Its a hard thing to deal with mainly because they have not been able to conclusively find out what causes it... or how to treat it super successfully. By the way, in small small doses the flexuril will help your back too.

Diet and exercise are also important. Do you eat wheat? You may want to go wheat free for a while and see if it helps.

I am 36, and have been dealing with fibromyalgia for 20 years. My recommended med regimen used to include pain meds, anti-spasmodics, muscle relaxers, sleeping pills and anti-inflammatory meds. I felt so yucky from the drugs and some of them caused even more stomach problems, too, that out of desperation I went looking for other options. What finally worked for me was chiropractic care and acupuncture (acupressure or electronic needleless acupucnture are good alternatives if you don't like needles). Now, I go to the chiropractor every 2-4 weeks, depending on how I am doing (more often during flare ups) and on very few meds for the FM - I use the pain meds maybe one or two days a month, the muscle relaxers about the same, and do not use the others at all (I do take benadryl sometimes at night to help go to sleep). My doctor has been very supportive of all this, and I still go to her regularly too for monitoring and check ups and such. It is definitely not the only option out there, but it works for me, better than anything else ever did. Best of luck to you!

Hi J.! I just wanted to tell you that I have gotten rid of my fibro symptoms by going on a low glycemic diet. I am overjoyed! Like Sarah J, I cut out all white flour and refined sugar.
Beware of people peddling their wares of the natural miracle pills. They may be fine supplements to take but as far as taking away such severe pain, don't buy it. I took Xango, Noni, Melaleuca, etc.... and none of them took away my pain. I took Magnesium and that helped for a long time, now I don't need anything!
"The Low-glycemic Revolution" is a great book to read. It's so simple! You don't have to buy into a company, purchase special combinations of pills or anything. You just eat in the way that is healthiest for your body!

I have the same thing and have been dealing with it since I was in my late teens, too! I was hopeless and sick of pills and then I found something that works and is DRUG FREE! It's a bracelet that has magnets on the back - for me within minutes of putting it on my pain was better. It's been nearly a month now and there are still times I'm in pain, BUT I can actually exercise, work, cook, clean and other normal things without fear of severe pain!
The guy I got the bracelet from is from Jordan, MN. I don't have his info with me but I'll try to find it. He had a booth set up in the Burnsville mall last month - not sure it's still there but you could call and check it out.
BEST OF LUCK --- I know it's awful being in pain and the majority of people don't seem to understand!!

Hi J.,
If you are not familiar with Mona Vie, you might check it out as a way to help. My good friend who introduced it to me is a massage therapist who has many clients who suffered, as well as her husband had severe fibromyalgia. Mona Vie is an organic superfruit juice blend, primarily made of the Acai berry. There is no other food in the world that has more antioxidant properties to help manage inflammation. And, as a juice, your body absorbs 100% of the nutrition quickly.
If you'd like more information, feel free to call me at ###-###-####, or check out www.mymonavie.com/jesnough. We do weekly tasting parties to share more information about the juice, and I'm also happy to chat one on one!
It's made a WORLD of difference in our family, and might be a good help for you, too. I can also put you in touch with my girlfriend to hear first hand her husband's experience drinking it, or that of her clients.

I'm so sorry you have this. I have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for almost 12 years now. There are many overlapping symptoms between the two diagnoses and in fact some experts believe they are just different subsets of the same illness. My pain is primarily located in my upper back and neck. Muscle spasms that are unbelievable. Like you want no one to dare touch them. The primary help I've gotten with the acute pain is going to Physical Therapy. Heating packs, electrical stimulation, and that sort of thing. Of course combining that with a muscle relaxer seems the best, but I get so looped on those meds. I know this sounds the reverse of what makes sense, but preventing the muscle spasms in the first place is key for me...and exercise has been the only real thing to help. I have to warn you that I've tried what feels like EVERYTHING. Special diets, supplements, and on and on. Chiropractors have helped sometimes initially, however my pain returns worse than ever. One great way to start the appropriate excercise is to go to a special clinic for Fibromyalgia. There is one at Abbott Norwestern. They have a healthcare team that really know their stuff. I have seen/heard of the results of people coming out of there. I actually go to our local YMCA and take Yoga. It's pretty intensive, so I just do it at a level that works for me. It has been one of the greatest things to help me. The other is water exercise. Some Y's even have special classes for Fibromyalgia. The key is a warm water pool! To help you live with this diagnosis, especially without meds, I highly recommend taking the time and money to take care of yourself. If you get on a plan or system that works for you, you feel like a new person and so better able to face the rest of life. Gentle hugs, and best wishes.

I have a suggestion for temporary relief that you might try - get a lotion containing menthol or sperimint to help sooth the muscles. It's rather "homeopathic" but at least it is safe and something that can work until you find a perscription.

I have sciatica and a bulging disc, and hypothyroid disease. My neighbor has fibromyalgia and we tend to have similar symtoms. I know my neighbors doctor told her to exercize at least 5x per week.
We have been doing Yoga together (with a dance theme) to make a little more fun. I am a trained dancer and always got bored with Yoga but we love Yoga Booty Ballet (can buy at Target).
This seems to address stretching out focusing from the inside out through relaxation since stress is major a trigger.
We are also using an inversion table which is when you hang upside down from your ankles in order to fully relieve pressure in your back. I wouldn't do this without talking to your doctor, but this and the yoga seems to be helping more than anything else we have tried. There are expensive inversion tables and cheaper one. I don't see any reason to get the more expensive one unless you plan on hanging for really long periods of time. I found mine on craigslist for about $100. My kids get a kick out of it too!
Also carrying extra weight is hard on your body and can also cause pain. 5 lbs of fat on your stomach= 15 lbs of pressure on your back.
I would love to start a support group for syndromes like this that doctors don't seem to know much about. If anyone if familiar with Yahoo groups or meetup.com and would be interested in such a group, please let me know and lets set something up.

I have not found any drugs that work. I was diagnosed with fibro and lupus tendencies about 19 years ago. Tried drugs, didn't like the side effects. You might try chiropractic care. But you need to look for one who understands the disease. Attitude is the main thing though. You just have to live your life. If I ever woke up in the morning and didn't hurt...I would know I died. But as it is I get up every morning and decide that I am not going to let it win. Besides the pain, I have a low immune system so I get every cold and virus that comes around. I went to work for a chiropractor and she has helped me, and I have seen her work on others with Fibro. It really does help!!

I am 6 years into my 7.5 year schooling to become a chiropractor, and in that time I shaddowed a Dr. who was currently treating a woman with Fibromyalgia. She swore by chiropractic. She was to the point where after a treatment she would be pain free for a couple weeks and then when the pain started coming back she would go back in. (It may take a little while to get the pain managed to this point, but I have witnessed how chiropractic really has helped with this!)

My husband has had fybromialgia for 15 years and has managed it for that time with very little medication. He does have occasional flair ups, but is able to control it for the most part. The key for him is exercise, exercise, exercise. He makes sure that he works out for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. To moderate seratonin levels, it seems to be important to do as much outside as he can.
The other key is to make sure that he is able to sleep as well as he can. This is difficult for people with fybro. It involves a well established sleep routine, including lowering the lights during the evening, reserving the bedroom for sleep and ..., not for work, watching t.v., playing, etc. Making sure that the bedroom is very dark helps. A sleep routing like kids have...brush teeth, storytime, lights out. When he is having trouble...waking up in the night, the is medication to help sleep through the night, but that is the only thing he takes.
The hardest thing is to work out when he is having a flair up because it is uncomfortable to move when he is in pain. But if he makes himself do it, the results are worth it in only a day or two. He has recently taken up yoga to help with the back and tightness issues and this seems to be quite helpful.
Hopefully some of these suggestions will help. Good luck.

Oh J., I know exactly what you're going through. I was diagnosed with FM many years ago and I, too, have muscle spasms in my back, among other things. I have finally found a combination of prescriptions that help! I was reluctant to "pop pills", but I got to the point that I'd try anything. I now take Hydrocodone and Gabapentin (also known as Percocet and Neurontin.) I've been on exactly the same dosage for 3 years, so no worries about developing a tolerance and needing more. From what I can tell, that new Lyrica (I think it's called Lyrica) medication they're advertising for Fibromyalgia is a combination of the 2 drugs I mentioned above.
FM is sometimes referred to as a 'pychosomatic' illness, but don't let that hurt your feelings. It is true that stress can cause more pain, but from one FM sufferer to another, I know it's not in your head. Another thing that helps me is Relacore-as it really does reduce anxiety, and we both know that when the muscle spasms start, we get very stressed because Mommys can't afford to get sick!
Good luck, honey, I'll be praying for you!

Please see testimony below:
I do not know where to begin on how Vivix has changed my life. I have been in constant pain for the last four years suffering with Fibromialgia and Lupus. I was on all sorts of pain meds and nothing seemed to work. I also tried several prescriptions to help with the Fibromialgia still a complete disappointment. I heard about the benefits of Vivix of course I am very reluctant to try anything when the Doctors couldn't even prescribe anything to help me. I figured why not if it doesn't work I just wont order it again. Deep down in my heart I thought this stuff isn't going to work - well I made my self a liar. Within five days of taking Vivix I stopped hurting. I would get massaged three times a week before I took this just to keep functioning. I am on my second bottle and I can honestly say I am pain free when I went to the Doctors my blood pressure had dropped to 106 over 60 compared to 170 over 90 wow what a difference. I would recommend this to anyone that I meet that is in pain.

I too had an accident when I was in my teens and was diagnosed two years ago (I'm 31). Since then, I went through a Fibromaylgia Clinic at a hospital in Sheboygan. I had a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and a cognitive therapist. They helped me learn about diet, nutrition, stretching, exercise, medications, and relaxation. I think the thing that most helped was the physical therapy where my therapist taught me many stretches that were targeted to the pain that I had. I also incorporated some of the diet pointers in my life. It was an extensive three weeks, but my pain doctor calculated that my pain went down 55% from the 6 weeks of therapy! If you lived closer, I'd definately recommend St. Nich's program.
I'm on Trazadone which is an antidepressant with the side effect of drowsiness for a sleep aide and Cymbalta for depression and Fibromyalgia. Cymbalta works wonders for me, so I haven't tried Lyrica yet.

I actually had the same thinghappen to me. Was in a car accident when I was 19 years old. A car rear ended my car as I was parked and I got nailed from behind. I have had problems ever since. I had major neck pain. and my muscles just "hurt".
I then, was diagnosed with a nerve disorder and went through 3 years of physical theraly. Was heading to an electotherapist to help me deal with my pain. They had me on so many drugs I developed 17 allergies and more health problems arose from those same drugs.
Started doing my own research and found that fibromyalgia is a build up of toxins in the muscles.
I have had my fibromyalgia in control for the last 7 years and live almost pain free- without! drugs!!!
You want to learn more, let me know.
It's a blancing act!

Hi J.,
I don't know drugs but I do know Melaleuca and many folks with Fibromyalgia have been able to use there products and be close to symptom free from Fibromyalgia. I can have someone e-mail you about their experiences. I have heard of one person that was barely able to walk a few blocks but recently walk a 6 mile marathon. I can't promise anything but I have heard it helps. We also have a conference call you can listen to put on by a gal with Fibromyalgia that uses Melaleuca and other natural alternatives. Hope that this helps.
peace,
S.

Hi there,
My Mom had Fibromyalgia and it took years for the docs to diagnose it. Once they did diagnose the disease it took even longer for her to find a doctor who believed in the disease and treated her like a human being who was actually in pain. I hope you have better luck and find someone who will listen and will help. I know they have a lot of new treatments now (she passed away 2 years ago from something unrelated), so hopefully you can get some relief. The only advice I have is to keep yourself as healthy as you can. My Mom was at her best when she was at a healthy weight and eating well. Have you tried Chiropractic? Yoga might be helpful to you as well. Good luck to you!

I work for the courage center in twin cities- 4 locations. There are wonderful physical and occupational therapists that work with clients like yourself. 2 of the locations also have therapeutic warm water pools that therapist's use as well as special classes. It might be a good starting point.

I can´t understand from your letter if you have a physiological problem as a result from the car accident??? If so and you have tried absolutely all the doctors and they don´t know what to do ....well, the first place I would always go is to the most reputable chiropractor I could find. They can perform absolute miracles - it is truly a wonderful science.
Secondly, I was diagnosed with fibro. about 12 years ago - it is a constant struggle, as you know. After many doctors, etc.. I decided I was simply going to quiet down my life, get more sleep, regular exercise and do all the new age therapies I had time for. Read books that help you be in touch with yourself and you life. Forgive yourself first and anyone else that you feel has harmed you. Forget the past and enjoy each day. Positive, positive, positive. And make sure you do not have a raging case of candida in your mucous areas ie. intestine, throat (saliva), vagina, rectum. It can cause many problems.
Hugs and health, M.
Much good health

Have you ever tried Chiropractic care?? I was so skeptical about it at first. I have had back pain and tension migranes for as long as I can remember, I tried everything from physical therapy to lot's of different drugs. As a desparate attempt I thought I'd give Chiropractic care a go and I could not have made a better choice. I have been going for about 9 months and it has made such a huge difference in my life. If your interested I could refer you to my chiropractor.
