I was having pain on my right side a few weeks ago, I figured it was just premenstral cramps, then got my period and chalked it up to that. Well last week I was still having them, so my Dr. set up a ultrasound for me where they went in to the vagina with the camera and checked all my feminime organs, she called me the next day and said everything looks good but I do have fibroids on my uterus. Anyone have them and know what causes these? Can they turn cancerous? Should they be removed at some point? My Dr. said she's not worried about them at this time, but will keep an eye on them at my annual exams. Still concerns me though.
FYI, I am done having kids for sure if that makes any difference in your answers.

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who answered. So it sounds like it's more common that I would have guessed, I just never heard of them before.

I also have them. You have already gotten answers to your questions, but I thought I would share my story. I developed painful fibroids in my mid-thirties. The cramps would get so bad that I could barely walk. My doctor recommended trying a birth control pill and it has worked for me during the past two years, but she has told me that the BC may not keep them under control forever. Prior to two years ago, I had not used any birth control. I don't know if that makes a difference, but you may want to discuss it with your doctor. BTW, it is only certain types of BC pills that help and IUDs can aggrevate the situation (so I was told).
Good luck,
C.

I was told by my GYN that fibriods are very normal (and non-cancerous) and that many women have them, but depending upon where they are located, they may never be discovered. Here's some more general info: http://women.webmd.com/uterine-fibroids/uterine-fibroids

I had one discovered after I just couldn't handle the severe cramping and heavy bleeding that related to my menstral cycle. I underwent a minor outpatient surgery to have it removed. It was really no big deal. I'm not sure if the fact that you are done having kids makes a difference in the approach (I'm done as well). But one thing my doc did tell me is that many go undetected until after pregnancy, so it's possible that you've had them for many years, but didn't even know it.

Do not worry -- just follow the advice of your doctor and let her keep her eye on them. Good luck!

They don't become cancerous. But they are a real pain! I don't know what causes them, but I had a bunch and my periods got really really heavy in my late 30s. So bad that I couldn't even use a tampon the first two days, and I had all sorts of accidents. I had a hysterectomy about 6 years ago. Single best thing I ever did for myself. There are other options if you start having heavy bleeding, pain, etc. But a hysterectomy will eliminate those problems completely.

I had fibroids that did grow large enough to cause pain. They are not dangerous, do not become cancerous, and I don't think they know what causes them. They are a tumor composed of fibrous tissue. Having fibroid tumors is common.

You may never have to have them removed. Did the doctor think that your pain was caused by the fibroid tumors? I also had endometriosis and decided to have a hysterectomy at the same time that they removed as much of the excess endometrium as possible. This did reduce my pain but I don't know how much of the pain was the result of the tumors. I think most of it was the endometrium.

An ultrasound does not show endometrium. Endometriosis can only be diagnosed with surgery.

Having fibroid tumors is nothing to be frightened by. You may never have to have them removed. Your pain may be totally unrelated to them.

You can find info by googling fibroid tumors. Here is the first site I found. http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/fibroidtumors/a/fibroidt...

Years went by I start feeling my stomach really sensitive by my uterus area, i used the bath room at least every 5mintues and it almost felt like i had my period all mth from crazy cramps i was feeling at night then threw the day i had to drink pain killers then after awhile they gave out and during sexual inter-cause it felt like a monster climbing inside of me so painful against my walls and it got worst until now in 2014 i get pregnant my HCG levels is what made them expand and as the sack expanded the fibroids grew bigger . My point is tht im only 26yrs old i went and got a second opinion bcuz i couldnt take it no more i was hurting for so long that a cats paw couldnt lean against my stomach it was bad so then i finally got ultrasound and and screening done and paired for surgery i went in for surgery came out and for the Dr to tell me i had 15 of them 5 mango sized ones and the rest were small and all of them were around the uterus he took all of them out it was done very nicely now i can finally feel. no matter ur age you can request anything its ur health and if they bother yu get them removed asap ladies we deserve to feel free
