Dear Mamas,

Its V. from the UK again.
My son has been having fever since the last 5 days.
He had fever on friday and saturday last week. The temperature was around 104 on saturday.
We had a bit of struggle bringing the fever down.

Sunday and Monday he was OK.

Then he had fever again since monday evening. This time the fever is around 102.
He was seen by 3 different doctors ( 4 times in all, and by our GP twice).
The second doctor(think a junior doctor) thought it was bacterial, and gave a course of penicillin.

My GP and the senior doctor say its viral.

Any idea how long does a viral infection last?

Previously when he used to have fevers, they lasted for about 3 days.
But this time its lingering around.
Have any of you have had experience with this?

Thanks and regards,
V.

[P.S Today I saw his classmates at the clinic as well, and the moms were telling me that there is definitely a bug going on around.]

Thanks Mommyof1
Hi Amanda,
Thanks.
They have not done any tests.
Its based on physical examination ( like looking at the throat, ears etc).
Are there anything specific I need to request?

What can I do next?

Try a combo of Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Use the Ibuprofen and if in 3-4 hours is doesn't work add a dose of Tylenol. Sometimes you have to mix it up a bit.

And make sure you are giving the correct dosage. Call the doc and get the specific amount for his weight. Too low a dose won't help him.

Hope he feels better!!

A viral infection usually lasts around 5-7 days with residual symptoms of up to 14 days. I believe his fever should go away within the next few days. Make sure he is hydrated and so alternate with ibuprofen and tylenol. My daughter is 4 and my doctor said to give her 1 1/2 tspof motrin and in 3-4 hrs 1 1/2 tsp of tylenol and that usually does the trick. I also try and keep her cool with lightweight blankets when shes laying down. Has he been tested for the flu or strep?

I'd suggest having him tested for strep. My son had a lingering fever too (five days), and his throat was only sore for one day. They checked for strep and he tested positive. Amoxycillin works for him. Good luck, and hope your little boy feels better soon!
