Fever in 2 Year Old

My son is 2 and a half. He developed a fever of 103 2 days ago on Sunday evening. I was giving him motrin, then the doctor told me to alternate between tylenol and motrin. The fever finally broke yesterday evening. His temp did start to rise again this afternoon to 101, but gave him some tylenol and so far it hasn't come back. I took him to the doctor yesterday and the doctor could not find anything wrong with him, so we are waiting on blood work and urine tests to come back, hopefully tomorrow. Anyway, usually my son will have 2 or 3 bowel movements a day. The last time he had a bm was the day he developed a fever. Before the fever developed, he had a loose bm, but that has been it since Sunday. I'm worried because it is not normal for him to go this long (2 and a half days) without a bm. He had no other symptoms with the fever and he has been drinking normally. He also has been eating, not as much as usual, but enough that I would expect a bm. Have any other moms experienced this? Does anyone know if the constipation and fever could be connected. Don't worry, I plan on calling the doctor in the morning to see what he thinks, but I just wondered if anyone could relate. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I will keep offering him plenty of juice and water. It's nice to know that this is normal. The doctor did test for Strep, but it came back negative. The nurse wasn't able to get a good swab though, so maybe the blood work will show whether it was an accurate reading. Going on day 3 with no bm. He's eating and drinking normally now, so hopefully things will start flowing soon:)

Hi Loriibeth-

Has your son been eating and drinking like normal since the fever started? I know it sounds like a silly questions, but if nothing is going in, nothing will go out.

Additionally, water helps with constipation and the pooping process, since your son is ill and feverish, he may be dehydrated and constipated.

Before you call the doc, give your son some liquids and see what happens.

Good luck!

Hi, L.:

Get some Hyland 5 mg Vit. C tablets at your local Health Food Store.
That will help with the BM's.

Being constipated will cause and child to be sick as well as dehydration will cause a child to feel sick.

Keep water in a cup for him all day so he can drink whenever he feels thirsty.

Good luck. D.

Tylenol can cause constipation. Add the dehydration from a fever, and I'm not surprised. You could try some juice to get things going....

Hi Loribeth,
My son would often get constipated after taking Motrin. It may be possible it is the medicine, not the fever.

They could very well be connected. The most common causes of constipation are endometriosis, flurazepam and the polydactyly or myopia syndrome. The antibiotics and medicines to reduce the fever could in fact bring on the constipation. At some point you may want to find a better doctor or a health expert because this one seams to be stumped.

Yes fever and constipation are usually related. Have they checked for strep? I know that is what is usually the cause with my kids when its just a fever and nothing else.

My bet is on some kind of virus... The fever may be causing him to not eat and drink as much, along with dehydration, combined would totally slow his bowels. Try to offer him fluids more often. Its terrible when they are sick, I hope he feels better soon!
