Fever---When Should I Take Them to the Doctor?

My boys have been running a low-grade temperature for going on 4 days now. The temp will go down with meds but will be back up about 4 hours later. They are acting a little 'droopy' but not too bad all things considered. One of my boys is hoarse and seems to have a bit of a cough but no other symptoms in any of the boys. Any suggestions ladies???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My doctor was having a Sunday clinic today. Yay! I took all 3 boys in and, of course, they started jumping around and playing as soon as we got there. They didn't detect a fever in any of them though my Mommy's touch told me that they youngest was burning up. :( The youngest was tested for strep but the quick test came back negative. So....the doctor said it was most likely a virus and they should be better in a day or two. I hope so!

My rule has always been that when the fever gets up to 103, it is time to go the doctor. However, if they are hoarse and coughing, you might consider making the trip anyway.

My 6 yo has had this since Monday and my 22 month old since Wednesday. Exact same symptoms. Meds seem to make them comfy and they are still playing hard! That being said, if either is still running a temp tomorrow I will probably take them in. My pedi says the fever is just a sign that the body is fighting infection and unless it gets too high then it is perfectly mnormal. (Unless you are talking about infants) I think there is just something in the air right now with the daily weather changes we have seen. I would give them another day or two unless they really just seem wiped out- then I would call the doc. Good Luck!

I believe the rule of thumb is between 103-104 or if you can't break it in 48 hours. Fever is actually a good thing and there is a lot of stuff going around lately that unfortanitly all you can do is wait it out, as hard as that is.

I responded before I realized the problem was solved. I am glad your boys are better now. You did the right thing by taking them to the doctor.

My son had this two weeks ago. In fact his whole soccer team had it at the same time! My son ran a high fever (btw 103-104) for 5 days and had to be put on a high dose of meds fro a week. The rest of the team was low grade for 3-5 days and then it cleared up. It was the same for us though. Fever left with Motrin and back in 3-4 hours. He acted fine and was just a bit more sleepy than normal. The cough came towards the end.

D.,
My Pedi suggest after they have ran a fever for 3 day to take them in because there is something going on.

I just had a child that could not go to school because of a fever( low grade) they took her to the doctor and he said there was nothing wrong but she could not go to school. She had a cough and what he recommended was Delsym for I guess her cough but hoarse may be close. I would as the pharmacist. It just costs so much to go to doctors but I have no idea what you should do. G. W

Hello D.,

I don't know how old the boys are, but 4 days with ongoing low-grade fevers doesn't sound good. Usually, Drs. have said that it is not necessary for visit unless it reaches 102. It sounds like more than a cold, it sounds like it's bacterial. The hoarseness could be strep if it is uncomfortable for your son. My daughter just finished her 10 day antibiotics from having strep, she also had a low-grade fever. I would recommend the mommy instinct and prayer.

God Bless!
