I'm reading this 8 hours after you posted it. I'm desperately hoping that you called the doctor's 24-hour info line at least 7 hours ago. I would not be on the internet waiting for a bunch of moms to get around to answering. I'd be using the free advice line from the doctor who knows my child the best, who knows kids' health in general, and who knows what diseases and infections are "going around" in your town. Call now. Please. Your child deserves a proactive parent who makes good decisions under pressure.

Why not call the doctor and ask?

While it's not a really high fever it's hard to say what could be going on with her hands.
My first thought was maybe a reaction to something she washes her hands with at school.
But if it's some kind of rash - rashes can be due to so many conditions/viruses/infections/diseases - it's best to take a picture of it (in case it goes away before you can get her to the doctor) and show it to your pediatrician and let him figure it out.

There's a nasty bug going around here at the moment. One of mine is sick and has terrible fever. Warm hands and just flushed all over.

If you're talking red hands though, are you talking rash? Marks, spots??? I'd call the school and see if there's something they know of going around, because if so, you might want to get her in if she needs to be seen.

One (or two) of ours had what mynewnickname mentions below (hand, foot..) and I can't remember how it started but there are telltale signs to look for. We were notified at the daycare though. It's very contagious which is why you might have heard from the school if she was sent home, but they may treat that as confidential - I don't know. Our daycare told parents in notices.

Good luck - hopefully she feels better soon.

I would advise you to contact her pediatrician if in doubt though. We can't see and aren't experts as you must realize (have to mention the obvious).

Roseola, Fifth Disease and Coxsackie should be ruled out by your ped. Call and ask the ped’s office to do this. Don’t wait.

First thought - hand, foot and mouth virus. Keep an eye on her mouth in case she develops blisters in the next few days. Not all kids get the mouth sores, but if she get them, they can be painful and can be treated. A phone call to your ped to find out what specifically they recommend is good (I think mine said to dab on a mixture of benedryl liquid and maalox, but that was years ago, you'll want updated info).
