Tammy C is right--a temp of 100.4 in a 10 week old is considered a fever and you should call the doctor.
You need to take the baby to the doctor or ER ASAP!!!!!!! Anything over 100 in babies warrants a doctor or hospital visit.
Don't worry K., 100.4 is a low grade fever. Not uncommon at any age. If it keeps up at a low grade for 24 hours, call your Dr.
Call your pediatrician for this, they will understand. Especially with the crazy flu issues going on these days. For the future I would suggest having a reference book at home. What to Expect the First Year or something similar. It's been invaluable to me to at least get a quick handle on how urgent things are. Now as my oldest is 4-1/2 I am planning on purchasing a new book that will address sickness and first aid for the post-toddler stage.
Hi K., I just have 1 thing to add, after this passes be sure to know your baby's normal temp. & the location of the body you get that temp. One of my kids "normal" was 97 (ear thermometer) so yes a 100.4 for her would be what I thought high... The other 2 averaged at 98-99 as their normal temp.
Also I too held off giving tylenol too because letting the fever do it's job & actually not obscure what was going on with their body seemed more the right thing to do. If I masked with tylenol how would we know?? Once we were on the road to recovery & knew what was going on then I would give tylenol.
Hi, K., I really like this website - babycenter.com - it has helped me through all of my daughter's baby/toddler years! I copied a bit from the website for you to read - and, in my own experience, I found that my daughter's temp ran higher than the average 98.6 most times as an infant while she did not portray any other symptoms.
This is what I copied from that website regarding your 10 month old's fever:
A fever is usually a sign that the body is waging a war against infection. Taking your baby's temperature can confirm your suspicions and help you and your child's doctor figure out the best way to get your baby back on the road to health.
Most doctors — and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) — agree that a normal body temperature for a healthy baby is between 97 and 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (36 to 38 degrees Celsius). If your baby's rectal temperature is above this range, he has a fever.
100.4 in a 10 week old is not common. Call your doctor.
I would give a dose of tylenol. If after taking the tylenol, you can't get it to go down, then maybe call the doctor if it's not gone in 24 hours. I agree with most of the responses that this is a mild fever. A trip to the doctor is going to result in WATCHING the fever first. If there is no other sign of illness with the fever, I would wait. My daughter will be 2 in Feb. and still has bouts of fevers with no explaination. Sometimes their little bodies fight things and we never even know that there was a problem besides a fever.
Hi K. I would advice you to call your 10 week old peditrican and get a professional input. I know the normal temp. is 98.6.
Let's just start by saying I'm not a doctor. OK
Now, yes, it's common. It's very mild, it's probably nothing to worry about. The baby may or may not have a little "bug", but his/her body is getting rid of it with the very, VERY low grade fever. I wouldn't even give tylenol. Just keep an eye on it.
Hi K.!
In an infant younger than 3 or 4 months a temperature of 100.4 degrees is considered a fever and a call should be put in to the Dr right away. Right now your infants immune system is immature and not able to fight an infection as easily as an older baby's. With everything that is going around... and I am not saying just H1N1 but regular flu, strep throat, colds and all... the Dr would definately want to know about this!
Also, do not bundle the baby up! I learned this the hard way with my first child! I was raised with the thought of sweating out a fever and did the same to my son! All it does is cause the temp to raise and you will be in the ER in no time and feeling like I did when I got chewed out by them! I learned real fast! lol
I hope all is well and wish you and your new baby many blessings!
Are there any other symptoms? If it goes up or she has a cough and/or runny nose, call your pediatrician. Not to scare you, but when my 4 year old was 3 months old, she caught a cold and developed RSV. She was in the hospital for several days, and developed asthma from it. At such a young age, it might be a good idea to let your dr. know what's going on and see what they suggest. Best wishes to you!
No, this is not normal. It is too early for teething. My kids were sick with the same fever. Watch for other signs of illness like congestion. Is anyone around her sick? If it is an ear infection your 10 wk. old would be crankier when lying down. You can call the nurse for her opinion.
At your child's age, do not wait to call the Pediatrician -- please call now for advice and instruction.
NO. Keep a very close eye. He may be young but he could have the on set of an ear infection or another kind of infection. A baby is no different from an adult, a fever is something you need to watch. A babies temperature can rise very quickly because bodies do not have the built up resistance that we have. I personally would call the Dr. and ask if Tylenol should be given, followed by a cool bath or if he would like you to come in a get your baby check out.
Call your pediatician...usually when you take home the baby, the hosptial discharges you with A LOT of paperwork. On that, it probably states anything over 100.4 (i think that is what it showed; my daughter is now 13 months!) to call the doctor. It is low grade so don't worry. And just so you know, I called my daughters pediatrician with 99.9 fever and with anything, and everything, else. When in doubt call the pediatrician about anything...before asking anyone on this message board.
Yes low grade fevers are very common. You should watch anything around 103 or higher, especially for more then a day or so. The baby is building his immune system so could have multiple low grade fevers over the first several months. Whenever mine had about 101 or slightly higher, I tried to make them as comfortable as possible and and wiped them down with cool clothes. The fever usually broke within a day, less then 2. Of couese, you could always call the doc's office for peace of mind.
Not ok at ten weeks. Call your dr.
Did you take it rectally? If so, 100.4 is the lowest a temp. can be and be considered a "fever". It's probaby not a big deal, but I'd call your pediatrician anyway. Also, always wait at least 30 min. after your baby wakes to take their temp. in order to get a more accurate reading.
K.,
Newborns are so small, and little things can turn into bigger things quickly; I would call her pediatrician. In these days of RSV and swine flu, I would fall on the safer side and call today.
Hope your little one feels better soon!
