My son woke up last night with a fever of 102.1. He was not acting sick nor did he look sick. I gave him motrin and he went back to sleep. This morning he got up and was totally acting normal, playing like usual etc... we went a picked up my in-laws at the airport and just a little while later while at a friends house (he was playing with his cousin) he came to be and told me he was tired and wanted to go home and take a nap. This was around 10:30. I picked him up and he was burning up! so i just excused myself and we went home. i took him temp and it was 103.8. i Gave him motrin again and had him drink a glass of water. His temp came down to about 101 with the motrin and so 3 hrs later i gave him tylenol. His fever has not come back. He has been acting VERY normal. playing, eating great, drinking lots, jumping around like he normally does. He took at 2 hour nap like normal. I am not sure what it is??!
Has anyone experienced this??!
(added note: he has all his teeth, so he's not teething. he will be three in sept.)

What can I do next?

Has he had roseola yet? My 20 month old had the same symptoms (fever and lack of other symptoms) a few months ago and the doc said it was likely roseola and a bumpy rash would appear when the fever broke, or shortly thereafter. Sure enough, after two days of fevers over 104 and two days of no other symptoms, she got the rash and it lasted about a day and a half. It's really contagious, but pretty harmless. It sounds like you're doing a great job keeping the fever down and keeping him hydrated!

Hi A., your son may be getting his two year mollars, if it doe return, above 101 i would take him in for piece of mind, kids do run fevers for all sorts of things, one of my day care kids was sent home for 104 but had no symptoms of anything wrong except he was tired and it turned out he had an ear inffection, so it is always good to get them cheked. I pray he is doing good. J.

Hi A. -
Sounds like he's teething. He's probably drooling and chewing on stuff too, but there are other signs.

BTW, if the fever gets too out of hand, put him in cool (not cold) water and that should bring his temperature down fast.

Good luck, L.

It does sound like teething. I would just keep track of his temp every two hours and continue using the motrin or tylenol as directed until the fever goes away completely.

It's probably a virus , it's that time of year for the fever and rash viruses ( don't be surprised if he breaks out in a rash). If he is not showing any other symptoms I wouldn't worry too much and just give your ped. a heads up.

However , NEVER place a child in a cool bath to lower a temperature. That is for emergency cooling only and should be done in a hospital . Rapid cooling causes a rebound fever and can lead to convulsions. A cool towel on the forehead or nape of the neck is fine.

Here is some great info on fevers
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t082100.asp

"Remember, fevers are your body's natural response to infection, and not necessarily a sign that something serious is taking place".

Hope he is feeling better soon,

I would have to agree with one of the other responses with the teething. My son got a fever like that when his 2yr molars came in. It only lasted a day/night and then it was gone without any other signs of sickness. A temped bath works, also I have researched online about how to bring fevers down without medication and have found that adding powdered calcium lactate to juice, water, milk is effective for low grade fevers because it's not immediate like Motrin/Tylenol. You cant overdose so you can add it to their drink each time. I personally try to avoid medication at all cost!

Sounds like you are doing a great job!
