My daughter had her one year shots on August 7th, one of which was the chicken pox vaccination. Yesterday, she was feeling really hot and I took her temp and it was 103.6, I was very alarmed by this because she wasn't acting really sick. I called my ped and they thought that is was a reaction to the chicken pox vaccine, I just wondered if any of you moms had experienced this delayed reaction to a chicken pox or other shot?

So What Happened?

Thanks to each of you for all of your messages and experiences. As it turned out, my daughter has the hand/foot and mouth virus. She is doing much better and so are we especially after taking her to the doctor.

My daughter's pediatrician specifically warned us that children often get a fever and possibly even a few spots two weeks after the chicken pox vaccination. No fun, but apparently it's common. Best of luck!

It can be a normal reaction from what I've been told. I myself chose not to have that particular vaccination done. It only lasts 5 years, and doesn't make them immune, it has to be repeated. So I figured why not just let them catch it normally, get the immunity, and then not have to worry about them getting shingles when they're older, which is WAY worse.
If your doctor isn't worried, just give her some tylenol for the fever and keep an eye on her. Good luck.

Hi E.!!!

When my 18 m/o had his 1 year shots they did tell me that he could have reactions to the chicken pox vaccine up to 2 weeks later. This was news to me me with our 3 older kids I was never told this. The doctor also told me that he may even break out in a spot or 2, and if this happened that I would have to keep him away from the littlest 1. He did end up with a super high fever a couple weeks later, we were doing our best to keep it under control, but he even had a seizure very early 1 morning that frightened us all, but in the end he turned out to be fine.just his body reacting to the fever spiking up very suddenly. Gave us all a good scare though!!! ;-)

So I just wanted to let you know this is pretty normal. Though being a new mom I understand where you're coming from. With our oldest, and being new parents, everyting made us nervous. It just comes along with the great title of being "Mommy"

Take care, keep a good eye on that fever, and make sure to tell us how everything goes.
Bless you and your baby.
Cindy

My ped said that at 2 weeks you can see a reaction. My daughter had a few spots appear on her shoulder exactly 2 weeks after her shot and they said it was most likely a reaction to the shot. I can't remember if she had a fever or not though.

I agree with the other moms. I was told for all my kids that spots and a fever can occur about two weeks after the shot. Don't worry, it's normal (though not fun). She should be feeling better soon!

This kind of reaction, while common, is not "normal". Every vaccine carries the risk of sickness and death, and no vaccine is guaranteed effective. This is why we have chosen not to vaccinate at all, after doing our research. Even for those who vaccinate, certain ones like Hep. B and chicken pox are easy to skip, as the disease risk is so very low. Private message me if you want more info.!

When my boys got it I was told they can get a reaction to it up 2 weeks after and even get spots while our oldest didn't we ended up in the ER a few night later w/ our youngest bc his temp was 106! the ER dr sucked and compeletly dismissed us and treated us like idiots for coming in even though when I called the ped he said if it didn't go down after an hour after having motrin to bring him in. My poor baby also had his MMR that time and his fever was so high bc he ended up w/ measles. He had a rash that covered is face all the way down started at the ER but the dr said it was just his body fighting off a virus and his fever and rash had nothing to do w/ his vaccines well we went in to his ped on Monday and we had to go in through the employee entrance so that we wouldn't risk infecting other patients.
