Fell down and Hit My Head

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and today as I was getting into the shower I fell down and hit my head on the edge of the tub I did my best to avoid falling on my stomach and from what I can remember I did not hit my stomach at all. The baby has been moving around like normal if not more. I'm still worried that something could be wrong should I go see the doctor or am I fine?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

If you don't remember hitting your stomach you may have hit your head hard enough to get checked out for a concussion. The baby should be fine at 34 weeks even if you did fall on your tummy, but the repercussions of a head injury can sneak up on you when your not expecting it!

I agree that the head injury is more concerning than the baby. Our bodies are amazing at protecting babies in utero. You could fall directly on your belly with little to no effect on the baby. Your baby is cushioned in the most sophisticated shock absorbing system on Earth. Your other internal organs would yield in an impact before your uterus would. Don't worry about the baby. That being said, you need to make an appointment with your doctor for a neural exam if you hit your head hard enough to leave a mark. Don't wait, do it now.

From reading your post, I was more concerned about you hitting your head than something being wrong with the baby. At 34wks, I doubt you did any damage. To clear your head, call your doctor and let him do a sonogram. I hope your head is doing fine

A call to your doctor can't hurt anything. I'm actually more worried about your head injury than the baby! Maybe you should have that checked out also.

I fell when I was pregnant, and I fell on my hip. I called my doctor and his nurse returned my message. She said to go to urgent care or the ER. I chose urgent care, but they didn't have the equipment to check me out. By now, it was after hours. I called my doctor back, and he was furious, because he said that he'd told his nurse to tell me to get to Labor & Delivery IMMEDIATELY!!! He said that any time a pregnant woman falls, they're supposed to go in and get checked out.

The fall put me into labor, even though I had no idea I was having contractions. I had to have three shots of turbutaline to stop labor, and had to stay overnight for observation.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR.

I fell a couple times during both of my pregnancies. I called the doctor and told them what happened, and they said to watch for specific things, and that if I don't have them then not to worry. I would call your doctor and let them know that you fell and hit your head, and have your doctor decide whether to be seen or not. I was not seen for either of my falls, but then I fell down the stairs and landed on my backside.

Have you had any issues with your vision? My concussions all involved loss of vision, etc...Personally, if the baby is moving around just fine and and you feel ok and don't want to go to the doctor, then just have someone help keep an eye on you--abnormally sleepy behavior or anything else abnormal or an increasing headache should send you straight to the hospital. That being said, the better course of action may be to run in for a check up--that baby needs a momma at 100 percent of her ability.

Best wishes and blessings,

I knew a man whose wife was about 36 -37 weeks along... she slipped down the stairs. I don't mean fell down, just slipped. You know where you just fall on your bum and then maybe slide down one more step.
She thought she was fine.
The baby was stillborn the next morning.
So you need to see your doc right away. I might even head to the ER or Labor & Delivery.
Good Luck

Did it knock you out? If so, I would go see the doc for you and make sure you do not have anything wrong. The baby is most likely fine, your body is built to protect the baby at all costs. Just to be safe though, I would have your head checked out and stop by the OB and have them check out the baby too.

Good luck and congrats!

I vote yes. Go see the doctor. You posted this yesterday so I hope you've already done it. If it turns out there's no problem, you haven't wasted the time or the money because you know you and baby are fine. But if there's a possibility of a head injury, it needs addressing right away. Why are you sitting here? Go to the phone! :^)

Go to the doctor. You can possibly have internal issues with the placenta detatching or something along those lines. I wouldn't risk it. I fell with my second pregnancy. I thought it was silly to go to the doctor, but my husband insisted. He was right. Although everything was okay with the baby, the doctor confirmed that it was important for me to come in to get checked.

Hi L.,
I hope you are feeling okay. Despite the fact that you didn't hit your stomach, I'd say call your doctor soon and explain what happened and go from there. It's always better to be safe than sorry. My story is totally different (so I won't get into detail) but I, too, questioned if I should call my doctor when I was 30 weeks pregnant. I am SO GLAD I went with my gut and called because it turns out I was experiencing early contractions. Long story short... they were able to keep the babies inside for a few days and that meant the steroids were able to develop their lung development. (My twins early but the treatment given to them prior to their births really helped the outcome. (That's why I say... it's better to be safe than sorry!) It sounds like your little one will be just fine, but just to be sure and to have peace of mind, call your doctor soon.) Good luck and God Bless!

If you didn't hit your belly, and your baby is doing normal things, the baby is probably fine. However, if you get dizzy or feel drowsy or sleepy, you need to see a doctor about your head.

you are FINE, trust me..
the baby is WELL protected in your cushy tummy and can take a LOT.
If you were at all concerned, you'd call DOC, not ask mother's on a site.

I once heard a story of a pregnant woman falling from a few stories.. not sure how far along she was, but she AND baby survived just fine.

Head injuries of any kind should be checked out. The fact that people post questions on here like this concerns me. Is it worth a risk to your baby to NOT go to the doctor? I have never understood people who post medical questions on a message board. And i dont mean the "this happened to me anyone else" i mean the " i fell on a knife but i pulled it out and seem to be fine, should i see a doctor" type questions.

I know this is a wee bit witchy, BUT lady, we are not doctors, and a fall with a blow to the head is pretty significant, a fall with a blow to the head, while pregnant is EXTREMELY significant.

Why do people not call their doctors instead of asking on here?
