So I got my Mirena in December. I was doing fine until almost 3 weeks ago when I got my period. It came like a normal period but has not fully gone away. I still use a panty liner every day. The kicker is, now I am starting to feel light headed and nausiated. I am talking to my doctor and running tests but wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue. Something is just not right.

Anyone have an idea as to what is going on? I am starting to get worried that my body cannot keep up with the blood I am loosing.

ETA- No clotting. Changing liners about every two hours. They are not completely saturated but they do get close. There are no clots.

What can I do next?

Sounds like a bleed-through. The dosing of the Mirena is not working for your body. I had this happen to me when I was on Ortho-TriCyclin. I had to switch medications.

It is possible that you are slightly anemic from the continued blood loss.

Your doctor should be able to run a blood test to determine.

If you are using a panty liner only - not a full pad, and you don't have to change it constantly - then this is not about blood loss. I don't know what is causing your light-headed feeling, but it's not b/c of blood.

If, as someone mentioned below, you ARE using full pads and changing them every hour or two because there is so much blood, then that's a totally different story. But your description doesn't sound like this.

Also, after I had Mirena inserted, I had spotting every day for several months. I only had to use a panty liner, and that liner lasted the entire day. But my doctor said that light bleeding was totally normal for the first 3 months (and even up to 6 months its considered normal as long as it's not a lot of blood). It sounds like you are in that timeframe and you aren't bleeding excessively, so that part sounds ok.

Of course you should still follow up with the light-headed nauseaous feeling with your doctor. But I would not necessarily blame it on your Mirena.

I know MANY women on Mirena and they love it because after the first few months of their bodies getting used to it, their periods are super light or non existant at all.

I don't know anyone who has had problems or hasn't been happy.

I had a hysterectomy before Mirena came out, so I have no personal experience with it myself, but from what I was told, there was a little cramping at first, then smoothe sailing.

Unless you are actually hemorrhaging, I don't think the blood loss is too much of a concern, but you really need to follow up with your doctor.

Not all forms of birth control are the best for everyone.

Best wishes.

When pregnancy prevention was still a concern for me, I researched my options, specifically the IUD. I determined that I would NEVER use Mirena. There are way too many horror stories out there.

Yes, I am well aware that some women love it. I just wasn't willing to take the chance.

Luckily, my hubby is fixed. Problem solved.

If you're loving the IUD, perhaps non-hormonal Paraguard might be a better option for you.

I bled for 6 months ans then spotted for another 6 months. All the while feeling pregnant....nausea, headaches, bloated, boobs full and slightly sore....seriously felt preggo. Had it removed.

I personally don't do well on birth control. I bought the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility".
