Hello. I have been feeling in my lower stomach area (below the belly button) what feels like baby 'kicks' or 'flutters'. I have one daughter, so I know what this felt like from being pregnant with her. I do feel them quite frequently.
The problem is that I'm not pregnant. I've taken 4 HPT in 3 months, all negative. I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but I have the 5 year IUD. My question is: does anyone know what else this could be? My husband suggested gas bubbles, but I don't think that is it. I'm not even sure what kind of doc I would go to for this problem. Has anyone had a similar medical condition that would cause these little thumps? Or anyone with and IUD with the same problems? The copay for our insurance is pretty high ($50), so I'd like to figure out what it COULD be before going to a bunch of different docs. Thanks for any help anyone might give!
My doc said what all docs say: Muscle spasms or gas bubbles. PT Neative. Guess we all just have to learn to live with these flutters. :)

I had the same feeling when my daugher was about 18 months old. I have no idea why, I wasn't pregnant. I had them come and go for about 6 months. I still had no clue what it was or could have been, I found it really strange too. So, I wouldn't worry unless you have anything else come up.

Wow! I get the same exact feeling, it's nice to see I'm not the only one. I get it occasionally, sometimes once a month, sometimes a few times a week. I really thought I was pregnant at one point.
I have a 2-year-old daughter and I have been wearing an IUD since a few months after she was born. My husband also tells me it's gas. I've been wanting to ask my ob-gyn about it but my next annual visit isn't for 6 more months.
The IUDs are very flexible, maybe they are waving around somehow? I can't think of what else would cause that fluttering feeling. Feel free to write me if you want,
L.

i had my first child in 2000 and i can honestly say that since that point i have felt those same little things... i would ignore them unless they are accompanied by pain. i look at it likes it one of my favourite memories fo being pregnant. and its a wonderful little reminder of it.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I get the same sensation. It is definitely not gas. At least mine isn't. I can only assume they are muscle spasms. I am a mother of two and am definitely not having any more, but I love to feel those little flutters and reminisce. If you aren't in pain and don't have any other symptoms I wouldn't worry.

I get similar sensations, especially if I stretch or sneeze. My doctor told me they are muscle spasms... called myokymia.

I don't know what to tell you about what kind of doctor, but at least I can say, you are not the only one that it happens to. I have them regularly, and have no clue what they are. I don't use any form of birth control as I want another baby, but am not pregnant yet....

I was told by an ob/gyn that it's gas AND that some IUD's can cause mild cramping (never used one) A lot of the what to expect books try to help you differentiate between baby movement and gas so it must be VERY similar. I would see my ob/gyn first about it. Not to scare you but $50.00 is nothing in terms of ruling out a potentially serious condition. I'd go to the dr.

Ah!! Thank god I'm not crazy, I too have the mirena and have stopped having a period and am feeling those little "flutters" I just keep saying it must be gas or muscle spasms. I've also resorted to taking pregnancy tests and they've been negative. I feel so much better after reading all these responses.

A., dont feel too bad... I had my daughter back in august of 2003 and still till this day I still feel those kicks and flutters. It most likely is just gas bubbles going through your intestines. From what my doctor told me, when you have a child your belly is more sensitive to the feeling inside of you. (Thats why they say that after your first pregnancy your other pregnancys you can tell when your baby starts kicking)
I wouldnt worry, unless it acompanies some type of pain or major discomfort there is nothing really to worry about. I been through it and I must of spent about $200 on HPT before finally asking a doctor about it. If you still continue to have concerns, do call your doctor, it is better to be safe then sorry but just remember your not alone.

WOW. So I'm not crazy. I have a 6 month old and an IUD (Mirena). And actually, just a few minutes ago I was experiencing those "thumps and flutters". They don't feel like gas at all. They feel just like a tiny baby kicking inside...I've felt around my stomach hard and thoroughly but I never find any type of lump that could turn out to be a baby. I know that sometimes babies can be positioned weird...to the point that you don't even know if they are there sometimes. I get so worried because I havent taken a pregnancy test. I'm 22. It's terrifying!

Your mind could be a very powerful thing, do you want to be pregnant?? if you do, this could be the result of your mind playing tricks on you. If this is not the case your husband might be right, gas bubbles might be the case. Many years ago in my twenties, I wanted a baby really bad and had numerous false pregnagcies, and beleive me it felt very real to me but there was no baby.

I feel these from time to time and I call them "phantom kicks" My DD is 15.5 months old, and I think it is just my body remembering when she was in me. I also think it could be something in the digestive tract, and it reminds me of her flutters.

Go to the doctor and confirm. You probaby aren't pregnant, but a friend of mine got her period for 4 months and did a few tests all negative and she was pregnant. It was a fluke but even if you are not pregnant you should find out what is going on.

I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse..... but for 2 months I did not get my period ... took 4 HPT and all were negative.... on the 3rd month when I still did not get my period I took another just incase and....it is now six months later and I have a baby boy on the way!!!!! When I told my OBGYN this he said it could have been just a missed period which will happen to every woman once in their life...and then actually got pregnant but the hormones weren't strong enough yet to give a positive.... so by the 3rd month(really 2nd of pregnancy) I got the positive reading... I was worried the whole time because my perods were very regular... but it might be worth trying another test you never know...seeing that your insurance copay is high you can try planned parenthood and get a test done there.... its pretty cheap around $10 or $15.... good luck!!

Well, would you like to be pregnant? Are you longing to be pregnant? Sometimes we as women can have psychosomatic symptoms of pregnancy based on our longing for it. Queen Elizabeth had 10 or so months of it.
It sounds like gas. Are you regular?
I pray everything is okay with you.
Get everything ruled out, regardless of your copay.
On a personal note, since we are on the gas topic. I have experienced that feeling like I was pregnant, but it was gas. At the time, I really wanted to be pregnant.

I would definitely check with your GYN doctor if you are wearing an IUD and having this problem. It may be muscle spasms.

I'm sure it is probably gas bubbles. After you have a baby all your organs and everything are pushed into new places. I have felt the same thing but never really thought much of it. If you are really worried about it though I would see a doc.

I had my daughter in june of 2005. I noticed that i was also having "flutters" long after the her birth. I did not go for the hpt tests because i knew that i was not pregnant. I still get them and my daughter is almost 2 years old. I am not sure what they are and i would like to know also. But on the other hand i love the feeling of what feels like little feet kicking my stomach, i loved it when i was pregnant and even though i am not now... I still like being reminded of her in utero.

That is so strange that you just posted this! This has happened to me like three times recently. I, too, have the 5 year IUD. I don't get a period at all on it, so it does freak me out. I think it must be gas...

Hunnie, I had my first child in 2004 and my second last June, I felt those little 'flutters' after my oldest was born, and I would constantly take pregnancy tests, after my youngest was born I've continued to feel them. I'm sure that there's some scientific reason for them, but I just look at them, like "my son used to make me feel like this"...I have the 5 yr IUD, also...

Hi, i am amazed at how common this seems to be. I never told anyone else that i experienced it until i read this. I feel it is muscle spasms, though because gas would seem to be more painful. Our bodies are amazing. It's great that we don't easily forget that feeling of being pregnant!

My son turns 4 this month... I have felt this same exact thing for 4 years!!!... at first it was unnerving!!!... but after a baby your body settles back in place(it was all squished out of the way for baby) and somethings lay slightly diffrently than they have all your life... I have never asked my doctor about it ... but your not alone... I feel it too!!!

Hi,
I've had those too, but I don't have an IUD. I just figured it was gas bubbles, or for some weird reason maybe my heartbeat. I feel my heartbeat sometimes in the palms of my hands. Nothing else is wrong with me. Except fatigue, but I have a 6 month old :) Sorry I can't help.

I'm so glad that you posted this...I too get those little flutters in my stomach and I also have a 5 year IUD. I don't get periods anymore and when I started feeling the flutters I took a HPT and it came back negative but I called my doctor and have an appointment at the end of next week. I will let you know how it turns out and what she says about the "flutters."
