My 5 1/2 month old has been eating baby oatmeal for about a month now. She absolutley loves it. She does amazing with spoon feeding and I was considering starting her on actual baby food today. She seems to not stay full for long on the oatmeal anymore and I think that since she is a supported sitter that it would be ok to give her actual baby food. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My ped suggested the rice and/or oatmeal at 4 months for a whole month, and then to start veggies by the 5th month which we tried today as he is 5 months old today! My ped suggested orange veggies 1st (less gas than green ones) and try one at a time for a few days at a time. Then introduce green veggies after orange ones and then fruits will be in the 6th month. We started sweet potatoes at lunchtime and he did great. Didn't make a face either way, just kept opening his mouth and wanting more. I just bought Gerber organic baby food. We will do squash next in a few days and then carrots. He still will get the oatmeal in the morning and evening and veggie at lunch.

I started all my kids with veggies.. the orange colored veggies are sweeter then the green. Just make sure you start 1 at a time and give it a few days to make sure there are no allergy reactions.

You could also mix it with the oatmeal too to start to introduction of other flavors.

I would go ahead with fruits and veggies. We started our twins at 4 months per the pediatrician, and introduced fruits and veggies after a week of cereal.

Definitely! We started Kayleigh at 5 months on "everything green". If you want to develop a baby who likes everything under the sun, I would start with veggies. They don't know any difference at this age! :) "everything green" includes... peas, beans, spinach, kale, broccoli, ... we puree our own food for Kayleigh so she is well versed in the "greens"! At 8 months old we introduced fruit, it was the best thing we could do. She now eats both eagerly. I have a feeling if we went for banana's first or something like that, she would only like fruit! Honestly, it wasn't until 10 months old we gave her sweet potatoes because we knew she would love them. :) So give peas a whirl, I agree, only 1 new food at a time and wait 3 days between new foods to see if they develop any reaction. I also agree w/ putting the veg in with the oatmeal, then after like the 3rd bite of mix give her a solid bite of peas and see what she does! Have fun with it!

I also agree with making your own food... it's so easy! And the varieties are endless!

sure, you can start on home made baby food. you can pick a category of food, such as by color. you can steam veggies, puree it and then freeze in ice cubes. try giving 3 days of the same foods to see is your baby develops any reaction, such as rash or diarrhea. these two are pretty common reactions.

it does take a long time to get through different veggies. good luck!

yes...wait a couple of days between new foods. I know this sounds tedious...it is. But when my son had an allergic reaction to eggs, I knew what it was right away!!

I made all my son's baby food. It's not as hard as it sounds. Cook up a couple cups of veggies, puree them in a food processor, then freeze the extra in ice cube trays. You have one portion in each cube, very quick to thaw, and very healthy for baby!

I started orange veggies first, then went on to lots of other veggies. I think it took me over a month to get to the fruit, and now at almost 2 he has a huge variety in his food and is willing to eat almost all his veggies!!

Have fun!!

One of my daughters favorites was and is avacado. Some peds are actually recommending it as a first food. It's very nutritious and very filling, and has a mild flavor too. It's super easy. Just cut off part of an avacado (probably 1/6 or 1/8), mash with a fork, and stir in some breast milk or formula until it's the right consistency.
