Our 17 day old baby is on formula and I can't remember when we started letting our first child just try to sleep as long as possible. I know at one month we were just letting her go until she woke up. At this point she is eating 3-4 hrs during the day and 4 hrs at night. If she doesn't wake up at the 4 hr mark we are waking her. I'm thinking we should start just letting her go so she can learn to sleep through the night...She is at a helthy weight too.

From the 1st 3 answers I see we shouldn't be waking her at night...do you during the day then?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

yikes...hope we haven't set a routine for her to wake up! I'm going back to work and need her to sleep as long as possible.

you do what feels and works best for your family. its not about her "learning" to sleep through the night. that isnt something you "teach" a child, its something you "nurture". good sleep habits come from the knowledge that parenting doesnt stop at 7 pm.

do what feels right for YOU. ignore the "rules", ignore people who say you will "spoil" her (milk only spoils when someone neglects to care for it properly), do what you know is best.

My son is four weeks old and our pediatrician told us to wake him at night every three hours until he regained his birth weight. I did so for the first week and a half and now he sleeps in 4-6 hour stretches at night. I did the same with my daughter for the first two weeks and she was sleeping through the night at six weeks. I never let them go more than three hours during the day without nursing so most of the calories needed are taken in during the day.

i would just let her sleep. during those first months her schedule changes a lot. it seems every two months our baby changes her sleep and eating patterns- just as soon as we get used to them. i would let her sleep during the day and at night.

Never wake a sleeping baby ;-)

If she is hungry, she will wake up. She will set her eating schedule.

I agree with Sue! Never wake a sleeping baby, she knows how to listen to her body, which many of us have forgotten how to do, and will announce her hunger when it announces itself to her. Go with her flow :-)

Our pediatrician told us not to wake them up at night to feed them. He told us this at our very first appointment with them.
