I have a 3 yr old little boy and I have become worried about his seizures.... He has had them since he was 2 and he will be 4 in april of 09. They have increased in quantity through the years but only when he is running a real high fever. Any moms have similiar circumstances or stories..All are appreciated

So What Happened?

I am concerned about the future and if any of your little ones have grown up to experience any other problems due to the siezures or can it be related? My son is doing better and I am always checking his temp...he had the hand, foot and mouth disease ane evidentally got ti from his school...he hasnt had many ear infections, but I am always worried if he starts pulling at them.....Thanks again for some really great insight.

I hope all of your little ones are thriving and grow up to be amazing people!!

I have mentioned it to the doctor and they just tell me he will grow out of them and that they do no damage..I dont see differences in the way he walks or talks, but I wonder about what they do to the brain and if it will affect him in the long run...He doesnt ever appear to be sick, he plays and then all of a sudden he will drop...I think I will just start taking his temp everyday--his temp can be at 101.2 and he gets them...soo scary..they tell me it is the spike that sets the siezures off, but I wonder if the siezures give him fever...Any more stories are much appreciated..Thanks for being wonderful mothers and so caring...

When my son was almost 2 (now 9) he had a couple of febrile seizers. He had a lot of ear infections and I was referred to an ENT specialist. They put tubes in his ears and he has not had anymore seizures since. He still sometimes will have spiking fevers, but they are controlable w/Tylnol and Motrin.

Best Wishes

Hi D.,

My youngest daughter also experienced seizures due to high fever. The last one she had was last year at the age of 8, but she was also experiencing a blood sugar low at the same time. (she is type 1 diabetic). But, prior to that I don't think she had one since the age of 4.

Good luck--I know how scary they can be.
DH

We've had the same problem with my son, now 4, but we control his fevers with a lukewarm bath and lots of fluids - save you. The baths work the best - save your money on doctors and try the bath first!

My 2 year old had one when he was 1 and boy are they scary. They haven't reoccurred, but we are really careful about treating the fever right away. Have you mentioned this to your pediatrician?

D.,
My daughter had febrile seizures when she was late 2's to 3's. We experienced them for about a year and three months. They only came on when she was sick and running a high fever. I know what you are going through. My daughter would have the high fever when she had an ear infection. At the time, she was in a mother's day out program. I pulled her from that program to try to cut down on her illness. (The school had disinfecting issues) I discovered this problem after we encountered so many ear infections and illness. I am self employed. I kept her at home/office with me for several months. When she was sick, I could not work. So, keeping her with me and working was more productive. The key is to keep him well.
When she was sick, I would put her to bed with me. I was terrified that she would have seizure in her bed. When they do have a seizure, keep them flat and stay calm. I always talked or sang to my daughter and prayed during a seizure. My doctor always told us she would outgrow the febrile seizures and she did. We went through many heavy rounds of antibiotics to clear up the ear infections. I wish you and your little one health and wellness. Hang in there.

I know this posting is late ...

Just wanted you to know I had febrile seizures when I was a young girl. I outgrew them by the time I was 5. When I was young they gave you Phenobarbital (sp?) to control them. However, I don't think they recommend that anymore for treatment (other problems linked to the medication).
Anyway, I'm now 42 and just fine!

Hope this helps.
Michele

Hi! My soon to be 3 year old son has had febrile seizures since the age of 1. Like you son they increased in quantity. After like the 4th time he got sick, was seen by a neurologist and placed on seizure medication. It got to the point where he was having like 3 in a row ... when his temp reached like 103.7 was when he would get them. Last time he got sick, he only had one, thank God. At the first sign of fever, I have to take him to the dr. and start him on tylenol and motrin. I have suppositories and even neproxin (sp.) to keep his temp down. He has had to be admitted to the hospital like 3 times because of his seizures. The doctors keep telling me that they grow out of it by age 5 ... but 5 is still a long 2 years away for me. The key for my son is to keep his temperature down. Other than that, he is a healthy, smart almost 3 year old! Good luck, but take your son to a doctor to get refferred to a neurologist.
