I saw this article on Facebook today (Posted by another Mamapedia member). I will post the link in the SWH

The article is dated April 29, 2013 but it talks about cases from 2007. The article talks mostly about the residue of a carcinogenic found in their baby powder. I do not use baby powder at all, but I do use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo and body wash on my 2.5 year old every other day for bath time. I'm confused as to whether the concerns were only for the baby powder or for all of their products? Is it time to throw out the baby shampoo/wash and find another brand?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Jen C. That is exactly why I don't use baby powder at all, but I was nervous because I use the same brand of shampoo

In 2012 they said they were going to reformulate their baby shampoo to remove the formaldehyde that has been present in the formula for decades. I hadn't heard about the baby powder. But have you seen the EWG's cosmetics database? It ranks everything from baby personal products to mascara, shaving cream, etc. on toxicity. Very helpful.

There are sooooo many chemicals in sooooo many of the brand name products people use daily. Luckily, more and more people are becoming notified and concerned. I remember going to a lecture on the toxins in the popular name-brand laundry detergents people use and "trust." This lecture took place 10 yrs ago. I am very cautious when I purchase products --- See sixwise.com and naturalnews.com.

Unfortunately, we DO have to check labels for toxins !

J and J did not put those cancer causing ingredients in the shampoos made for Europe...Interesting ! In fact, food in Europe is not GM. It is here ! Now, that is scary ! See responsibletechnology.com - if interested.

Check the Environmental Working Group's information like Lee suggested. It's WONDERFUL to see that the EWG is working to protect us !!!! Also, check the dirty dozen list about food !

I say that it's about time! Johnson and Johnson products are full of toxic chemicals, which they admitted awhile ago and said they would change their formula by 2015. I am kind of surprised, though, because our FDA has extremely low standards compared to other countries.

Johnson and Johnson is bad, but so are many other companies. I put all ingredients through the EWG website that someone listed below. I can see for myself how toxic those ingredients are and how they affect the body.
Some of the worst companies are those that claim to be natural! Arbonne and Melaleuca have some of the worst baby and child products ever. I wouldn't even think about putting them on my kids.

California Baby is a GREAT brand, and readily accessible.

While I am not a fan of many J & J products, the article cited is the ONLY article I could find mentioning this and it appears that it has NOTHING to do with the United States FDA. It appears to be India or some other country. Please people, do not take everything you read on the Internet to be the gospel truth.

I don't trust big box companies with their soaps. I use California Baby super sensitive frag free.

I always used California Baby on my kids when they were little. I had heard that J & J used two different ingredients that when combined were a carcinogen. They didn't have to say that because separately they were fine . Scary ,right ?

I know they have been saying for a long time now not to use baby powder (since mine were babies, and that was 10 years ago) because when you put it on their diaper or skin they breath it in. It is not about one brand, but any brand of powder.

as for the shampoo issues, I have no clue.

V.:

it affects the products cited in the article. the baby powder. Read the article.

“There were unacceptable levels of ethylene oxide, which is a trigger for cancer. Ethylene oxide was being used to bring down microbial load in the powder by sterilisation. But it was found that there was ethylene oxide residue in the talcum powder, which is primarily used on infants. In light of this, we have suspended the licence"

It's bad that a published article has so many spelling errors....

Any ways...the carcinogens were found in the baby powder. Not their shampoo, etc.

If you want to find another brand. Go for it.
