Farewell Present

Hello, we have a family day care provider that we love and who has been wonderful with our son from 5 months old until now (just over a year). However, sadly, next week we are moving 1/2 way across the country and the time to say farewell is coming. Any ideas for thank-you/farewell gifts? Any thoughts on how to help our 17 month say good-bye or help him know we are moving or is that just not a concept he will get at this age? He is aware of the mountains of boxes, but beyond that, I'm not sure. Thanks for ideas on either of these.

What can I do next?

You could give a small personal gift like the one suggested below. I also know a lot of people who give a monetary bonus to show their appreciation.

Hi A.,
For a gift - its a two parter...1. perhaps a collage of pics of your son from when he started until now...leave room for you to send future pics. 2. perhaps a gift card to their fav restaurant or home store.

For moving - if possible, get pics of the area you are moving to so that you can show him his new house, etc. but mostly at 17m they won't really understand.

I can't really help you with a present, I think you should give something that shows that you've really paid attention to who they are and what they like, something personal, though. I used to be a live-in nanny and it's really insulting to get a gift from the family you've been working for that is not only impersonal but doesn't reflect anything about you after spending so much time with them.

We recently made a big move from Utah to here and my son is two on Wednesday, I talked to him at some length about what was going on but he really just didn't get it and now he's fine for the most part but every once in a while, like when a song came on the radio that his uncle used to play for him, he will start to cry and act a little distressed from realizing that some of the people he'd gotten used to having around aren't there anymore. This gets better all the time though.

Good luck with your move.

I'm not so sure a 17m old would really understand moving. And sadly he probably won't remember his fabulous daycare provider either. My oldest was 3 1/2 when we moved. He knew we were leaving our old house and moving to a knew one. Beyond that he didn't really get it, nor did he care.

As far as a gift, I'm a picture-holic so I love the idea of pictures. But I'm also a stay at home Mom so I know the huge treat of "spa day". So maybe a nice framed picture of your son and your daycare provider and then also maybe a GC for a mani/pedi or a massage??

Congratulations and good luck!
