Family in Need of Thanksgiving Dinner

Does anyone know of an organization representing a needy family or family in need of a Thanksgiving dinner? My family would like to (adopt) a family in need this year and deliver them a home cooked dinner. I do not want to drop off goods at a local charity but rather deliver it myself and actually wish the family well. I really want my children to be apart of this so they can see how lucky they are to have what they have.

What can I do next?

Check out www.helpneighbors.com It is a fantastic charity that can connect you directly with families in your same zip code! I'm sure there will be families near you who would be thrilled to have someone bring them dinner. That is so nice of you!

South County Outreach is absolutely wonderful. Here is their information below. You can adopt a family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have participated in the program for a couple of years and have enjoyed helping these families. (Our 7 year old was 5 when we started and enjoys it too.) It has been a worthwhile experience. The families are truly appreciative. Hope this helps.

Hi T.!

I don't know of any organization with the info you are looking for but have another suggestion. Depending on where you live, how about inviting a Marine or two from Camp Pendleton for dinner? My daughter is former Marine and my son-in-law currently serving. We were blessed that she was stationed at Pendleton for the entire time she was in so could come home to Anaheim for holidays. We always had her bring extras home with her. It's heartwarming to have them when you know they would rather be home with their families but can't.

Hi T.,
I believe the Salvation Army has the adopt a family program you are talking about. I am not sure if it is only for Christmas or also includes Thanksgiving.
Good Job in taking your kids...I should do the same. Our kids these days don't know how blessed they are!

God Bless and Happy Holidays!

Hi T., you may want to check with your children's school(or local school). My family and I received a Thanksgiving Dinner last year and the school was the one who organized it. They may be able to help?
It's a wonderful gesture, especially now! God Bless.

try a local MOMS chapter. This is basically what they do.

Hi T.,

Call your local military base. There are a lot of families that need our support and could use a friendly face. My friend is part of a group that adopted a group of Marines from Camp Pendleton and for each holiday they do something for the families of their adopted soldiers and throughout the year they send letters/cards to the Marines.

Hi T.,

Try contacting your local Kiwanis Club. They are an international group but they serve on a local level. They may know many needy familys in your area. Good luck.

Hey T.,
The only things that come to mind are Meals on Wheels and also the local Union Rescue Mission. Meals on Wheels are a meal delivery service for the home-bound, many of which are seniors. The Union Rescue Mission is a food service location that allows you to serve meals to those in need. Both are excellent opportunities for your children to serve those in need.
