what the other lady said do sesame street, or whatever character shows they watch.
Can get a character, like Elmo or a clown.
At first we wanted to do something big for our daughters 1st b-day. But then decided she would be more comfortable in her own home and would enjoy it more if we kept it smaller at home. So we are doing a combined b-day for our daugther who will be 1 at the begining of the month and our son who will be 3 at the end of the month. Were just inviting close family, which would just include adults and older kids, basically teen and preteen. We still want to make it fun and special since it is her first b-day. And since we are doing a combined party I can't get away with going all girl for her. Any ideas as far as making it special for them both. And activities to fit everyone at the party.

I think that having a get together is nice. Celebrating two birthdays in one month can be frustrating....get your daughter her own cupcake, and then a cake for your son....She wont remember it, so do more for your son, but still keep it equal....try like a theme more so for family....the 1st birthday is normally for the parents anyways.......You could call it a sibling horah
I would pick something for the theme that your 3 year old likes...that is not too boyish of course. (Sesame, Wonder PEts, Dora/Diego) You should get your one year old her own cake for sure. They sell little ones that are perfect for that. Sing Happy Birthday 2x -one for each.
One other idea that my friend did I thought was adorable: Go to a pottery painting place and make a sepcial birthday plate for each kid that they will use every year on their birthdays.
Hey, it's winter, and everyone has had about enough! So how about a luau party? EVERYONE loves to LIMBO and you can have tropical punches and a cool palm tree theme with those blow up palm trees, etc. You could make/buy grass skirts for everyone to wear. You can buy blow-up limbo sticks at Party City and everyone can get in on the act. Keep it simple. I think it's fine to combine parties for both of them--just make sure your daughter gets her own little smash cake to dive into!
Do you really want to share a party on the 1st one? I think most birthdays are fine, but not the "special" ones. Please make sure you emphasize the 1st bday with her own cake, like the other post suggested.
how sweet to start a tradition where daddy buy flowers for the birthday girl, one for each year. and maybe a bouquet for mommy too.
I always think balloons make birthday's special.
if you are looking for Themes, you could do something like wonderpets or Backyardigans that have boy and girl characters, disney has some cute Pooh's first Bday party supplies that you could carry over into just pooh for your son.
With these ages i don't think you need to do anything more than maybe a meal, presents and cake.
I hope your daughter's first birthday is special. As a child who had to share her birthdays with a boy cousin, you might want to eventually do separate parties, when they are a little older. It was fun for a while but when i was around 8 i started to resent it.But that's just me.
Im a little late responding. But just a word of caution about shared Bday parties. Iam the mother of 8. My 3 older kids are from my first marriage. They are now 20,19,and 16.
The one thing they tell me most often is how much they appreciated their own individual parties. At their dads house they had to share their bdays with each other as one party and they hated it. My daughter had to share her parties with her half sister and step sister b/c they were all in sept. My sons shared a party with each other b/c they were both dec. I know yours are younger right now..just a heads up.
If you are that crafty with making handmade cards you could also make the cake right down to the little starbursts on top. As for games, My kids always liked pin the tail on the donkey - yes, it still exists! I have even found "Kiss the frog" (basically the same as the donkey only you pin lips on the frog).
Obviously it's too cold to do anything outdoors, unless you wanted to organize free time to play in the snow. (best snow angel wins a prize)
Have fun! It goes too fast!!
I was thinking a luau/hawaiian themed party, that is gender friendly and could be very fun!
