My 15 month old slipped and hit her head while getting out of the bath tonight. She didnt hit her head incredibly hard; but she did fall flat on her back, and she cried a little bit. She seemed to be fine while getting ready for bed. There were no bumps or visible wounds, but I am extremely worried that she may have a concussion. This happened right before bed, and she was sleepy before the bath, so my attempts to keep her awake so I could monitor her behavior were worthless. Should I wake her during the night to check on her?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your reassurance. Not long after I posted my request, I woke her up for the second time to check on her, and she showed me her eyes, ears, nose, and belly. We played peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake, and she gave me a hug and kiss. That made me feel WAY better, but I still woke her up once more in the middle of the night. I'm positive now that she's okay; I tend to worry ALOT about every little thing and I probably blew it out of proportion. Thanks again!

Check her vision to see if her pupils will expand and become smaller in light. Does she have difficulty swolling? Does she have muscle spasms? Are there any weaknesses or lack of movement of facial muscles or the entire side of the body?

When my boys would fall like that the doctor would tell us to watch him and then when he fell asleep wake him up every few hours but its not really waking her up. They told us to just like lift up his arm and drop it and when the child reacts in their sleep they are okay. Scary I know but just check on her a few times in the night and as long as she is reacting she is most likely okay.

i know this post was from a few days ago but i had the same type of situation when my son was about 7 months old. but i called the dr and she said the biggest sign of a concussion is vomitting. and fyi.... if young children like ours break their nose, they don't do anything for it unless it is noticeably crooked. i've called my dr numerous times. i think they know me by name
i just started an online support group on yahoo groups called mommiesandbabiesgroup
it's basically like this but more personal. also we'll have playgroups/playdates if anyone would like. but mainly it's to share advise, give advise, and talk

You didn't say, but I assume that if you're this worried, then you called the doctor. What do they say? I think that this site can be a wonderful resource, but when it comes to something like this, I rely on my ped. But, I know that even if they say everything will be fine, you won't be able to help but worry and probably won't sleep well. It's just natural mommy instinct.

Just for future reference, it really takes a big bang to cause a concussion. A nurse told me it's almost impossible to get one from things like falling off the couch, bumping in to walls. My husband was accidentally dropped on to concrete when he was 9 months old he didn't get one! She's got a lot more bumps and bruises coming. If she shows signs of pain for a bit and then gets happy, it's very unlikely to be a concussion.
Good Luck! :)

We didn't receive this message until Tuesday, but I am hoping things have resolved since last night? If not, you should take your daughter to a doctor if she is complaining about her head hurting. If she is back to her normal activity level and her pupils in both eyes are the same size than there is nothing to worry about.

I wouldn't worry too much. Kids take a lot of falls and are fine. Wake her every couple of hours to be sure she is ok. Make sure she can babble and if she talks at all make sure she can still talk ok. Check her for balance as she walks as well. I'm sure she will be just fine. You can also give her some tylenol or ibuprofin if she seems like she may have a headache.

I am 31 and have been married for almost 12 yrs. My husband and I have 3 boys ages 10,7 and 4. All 3 have taken some nasty falls and were just fine.
