Hi Moms! You have given great advice in the past, so here we go.....As I have gotten a little older (now 37), I have noticed an increase in facial hair. Some of it at the sides of my upper lip has gotten darker. Should I bleach it, or remove it somehow? Is there a specific product that you would recommend? I also saw a commercial for a prescription for facial hair. Has anyone tried this?? Thanks! S.

What can I do next?

I'm 49 and as menopause gets closer, I've had a few hairs try to grow on my chin. They are pale (blond or grey) and no one notices them but me but I hate the feel of a whisker on my chin. I pluck them. It's not as painful as plucking eyebrows.
The upper lip is a bit more sensitive than the chin. You could try bleaching or they have wax strips to help pull the hair out.
If it gets really dark and thick, you could try laser hair removal which would be an expensive but more permanent solution.

This often happens due to hormone changes.

You will need to decide what you're comfortable with. If you have light skin, bleaching is an option. If you have dark skin bleaching can make the hair more noticable due to the hair being lighter than the skin. Waxing is another option, though sometimes it can lead to a short term redness. Threading is another option, probably as initially painful as waxing, but with less redness.

Vaniqa is prescription cream you are talking about. It works only as long as you continue to use it, and isn't covered by insurance due to being cosmetic in nature.

The longest lasting option is laser, which can be painful and costly- but with Groupon, Living Social and other deal sites, can be obtained at a fairly low cost now. When I say painful, it feels like a rubberband being flicked on the skin.

I have, too, and I absolutely hate it. Mine are on my chin. For about two years I was plucking with a tweezer, but it was hard to keep up. About 8 months ago, I signed up for Groupon (visit : http://www.groupon.com/r/uu###-###-####). A local laser place had a deal -- 3 sessions for $125. I purchased 6 sessions and have now gone to 4/6. I love the results!! In fact, another Groupon came out for another laser place and I purchased two of those (total of 6 sessions for $200, what an unbelievable deal!) and am now going to start working on my bikini line and armpits. The pain is very, very minimal. Good luck :)

I used vaniqua. You still have to remove the hair. it slows the growth down. it did not sting. i got it online for maybe $40 a tube. I didn't stick with it though.
Lasers don't touch the lighter hairs so only electrolysis is permanent. And mine(which worked above my lip) took 4 visits.

Usually this is a hormone imbalance. I personally would only go to a naturopath to talk about this because they will put you on natural hormones whereas Medical Doctors use prescriptions.

Plucking is best (stays gone longest) if you don't want to laser zap it (permanent). Laser zap is pricey but awesome and should be done before you go gray, because it will not "take" on light hair.

Go get a thyroid up take test to find out if your thyroid is functioning. This is early for the hair on your face to show up. If you need thyroid take it You will lose weight, feel healthier and the extra hair will go away.
If your hair is dark you can get it lasared away.

i'm only 27 and i have had this problem for a few years. mostly due to my weight and hormone issues because of that. I pluck, but would really like something else to do. i have darker hair on my upper lip, and actually "beard-like" hairs under my chin. i find more and more every day. i'm working on losing weight, but would like something to help now, while i'm working on it. and if losing the weight doesn't help....

i'm looking forward to seeing the other responses.

Electrologists say that plucking makes it worse, so I'd stay away from that. I would seek out an electrologist and go that route, personally. Some facial hair is totally normal, by the way, especially as you get older. I've had some facial hair (like two or three on my chin) for years and as early as my early 20s. Electrolysis is really fast, easy and fairly inexpensive. It's not that painful either. You likely will only need 15 minute appointments and you will likely only need to go once every three weeks or so (I go once every five weeks when I go, but I went for a year and now I hardly have to go at all anymore - like once every two months). It really does make the hair disappear after about a year of treatments.

My facial hair is fine but dark and pretty much all over my face, so I remove it. Plucking takes too long, the wax strips and depilatory creams gave me a rash. Now I use something called the Bellabee which I found on Amazon. It uses a wire coil and is like "threading" in that it pulls the hair out by the root. It hurts a little the first time you use it but I barely feel it now, as long as I use it once a week so it's only pulling a few hairs out at a time. What I like best about this device is that it leave my face feeling super smooth afterwards.

I have very slight, fine facial hair (upper lip) which no one probably notices except me, LOL... but because I'm SO pale (red hair and freckles, hello) whenever I wear makeup it's a bit more noticable. I bought one of those small trimmers (I guess it's a nose hair trimmer, LOL) and occasionally I just buzz off any fuzz. They say shaving with a flat razor makes the hair grow in darker and thicker over the years (yikes!). I'm scared to shave my face! I don't know how guys do it ;) You could also have it waxed (which will really smart at first, until you get used to it). Even if you bleach, it will still be there.
