Get a Journal from Hallmark that has space to put in photo's and write memories. They have a lot of them. You could put in a lot of your memories growing up with her. funny stuff, serious stuff etc. she will love it.
My sister is turning 50 this year and I can not figure out what to get her for a gift! I'd like something sentimental, and have thought of something like a necklace about sisters, but she already has favorite jewelry that she wears, so I'm considering something else. She lives in another state, so it can't really be a spa day or wine tasting or something we can do together.
I am flying to see her for a super secret birthday surprise... that might be enough for her, but I still would like to get her a little something special. And I'm staying away from anything that is "over the hill".
Thanks for your ideas!!!

I think you are sweet to fly in and secretly see her.
I think you are very smart to steer clear of black and over the hill items.
I turn 50 this year and I started crying when I turned 49 and my day is in Sept.
At 40 I was upset and my husband gave me a little red miata convertible for my 40th bday and at 45 he gave me my first Mercedes. So, on New Years Eve, he knows how depressed I get about birthdays.... he presented me with my Mercedes SL 550 convertible. I LOVE it but I hate thinking about 50.
My preference is very low key, no surprise parties and just get through it. I am thankful for what I have and thankful that I do not look over 35 but the 50 word bothers me.
What about a pretty little box with 50 reasons you appreciate your sister. That is sentimental, special, and could be a good pick me up of she gets down about birthdays like I do.
I love the 50 reasons box below, or an scrapbook/album with 50 fun photos in it. Don't rule out jewelry - when a good friend turned 40, I found a great silver necklace at Tiffany that had 4 loops in it - it was a gift from three of us (we are a foursome friend group). So it symbolized four decades and four friends. It's one of her favorite necklaces - so if you see something that's her style and has some special meaning, go for it. Who doesn't like more jewelry?
How about a photo album of your favorite pictures of the two of you together over the years?
My sister has everything/lacks for nothing. I couldn't think of any gift that was suitable. Instead, since she LOVES dogs, I sent 50 different birthday cards over the month before her birthday - all with dogs - many breeds, some cartoons, hot dogs, Snoopy -anything about dogs. Then I sent her one small gift on her birthday. I think she loved the time and effort I put into this and the anticipation for the next card. And, she could put all but one of these 'gifts' in a 50th Birthday album that everyone could see [or not.]
Good luck! and remember, it's the thought that counts.
