Eyelash in Daughter's Eye Causing Irritation

My three year old daughter complained yesterday that her eye hurt. She ran off to play right afterward & didn't mention it again, so I assumed it stopped hurting. Today I noticed the outside corner of her eye is red & a bit puffy. Pulling her eyelid apart a bit & havig her look with that eye toward her nose, I saw that her eye is very red & irritated. I can see an eyelash in there but we can't get it to come out. She's a stoic little thing, but it is bothering her. How in the world are we going to get this eyelash out of her eye?

Thanks, mommas!

So What Happened?

We tried cotton swabs & rinsing it out, but it wouldn't come out. This morning her eye was terribly swollen, so we took her to the ER. Not a fun visit at all! The lash had come out on its own, apparently, but she's got a corneal abrasion, which has necessitated antibiotic eye drops. My poor baby! Her eye is still quite swollen, but should start to heal itself within the next couple of days.

My mom worked for an eye doctor many years ago. She would get two qtips and put a little neosporin or vasaline (check label) on one so that you don't get cotton in her eye. Gently grab her eyelashes with the dry q-tip on her lid above the lash line and flip her lid inside out. I know it sounds gross. Then get the eyelash out with the other q-tip. You could also just wet the q-tip if you are worried about vasalene. If you don't want to try this or if she won't be still for you just take her to the urgent care and they can do it. It needs to come out before it irratates her eye to much.

Jeris has a good recommendation. We have also used eye drops (non medicated) to wash the lash out.

Good luck.

Don't want to scare you, but we had this happen to my daughter as an infant. Because even your eyelashes have the potential to scratch your cornia, you need to have her checked out at the physician or opthamologist office, even if you get it out yourself. They place a dropper of dye in her eye and look at it under a black light.

If not scratched, great! If it is, it may affect her eye health or sight. Peace of mind about it = priceless!

Hope she's okay,
L.

I would try washing it out with some artificial tears, and if I couldn't get it out, take her to urgent care and let them do it. Poor thing!

Good luck!
