Eye Problem in 10 Week Old

I noticed a few days ago that one of my daughter's eyes is a little swollen. Then today when she woke up it was a little crusty. Throughout the day it has been watery and a little goopy. I am for sure going to take her to the doctor if it gets worse but I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with thier babies and what was it?

What can I do next?

I know tons of people said this already but I just want you to know you are not alone. This happend to my daughter when she was 6 days old, we were back at the dr. with a clogged tear duct. The doc gave us a cream that we had to rub on her eye 2 or 3 times a day for about a week and it was all clear. No permament damage at all! She is almost 1 (!) and she sees fine, no eye problems since.

My 4 year old had the same issue in one eye when she was about 3 weeks old. It was a clogged tear duct but the doctor prescribed an ointment and the massaging the side of the nose next to the eye should also help.

Sounds like a blocked tear duct. The doctor will give you medicine to see if it will clear up. Otherwise by 6 months they will unplug it at the eye doctor. And it should never return. If it doesn't they might have to do it again by 12 months of age. My son got it done at 5 months and it never came back.

get a regular old tea bag, soak it in water and then put it on your daughter's eye, the tannin will heal the infection

It's hard to say but it sounds like a clogged tear duct. My son had a goopy eye the day we came home from the hospital, the dr said it was a clogged duct. He has had antibiotic drops twice because the infection would come and go. I do a tear duct massage when it gets goopy or watery. He is now 3 months old and his eye is goopy again after being clear for a month. At his last pediatrician's appt I was told a clogged duct can take up to a year to open by itself, at that time if he is still having issues we may look at other treatments.

sounds like pink eye. most of the time this happens if they get their hand in their diaper and then touch their face. or maybe someone who changed a diaper forgot to wash their hands and touched her face. it's not a big deal to clear up. but it does require an rx from the doctor.

Like others have said, it might be a clogged tear duct. My son had this and outgrew it at about 1 year. I used an over the counter itchy eye cream. A warm wash cloth works well too. I would go to the doctor just to make sure it's not pink eye.

You are correct- something is wrong- are you nursing her? Then check what you have eaten that may be causing her a problem.
If she is on formula get her off, and on to real food. Honestly!!
Well done for knowing something is wrong- it is!
best, k

It does sound like a blocked tear duct. The doctor will recommend treatment based on the severity. My son had a blocked tear duct and the only thing the pediatrician recommended was a couple of drops of breast milk a few times a day. His case was mild. The fact that her eye is swollen makes me think you ought to at least call the doctor's office and speak to the nurse. The nurse can tell you if you need to come in or not.

Hi E. - as everyone else is telling you - clogged tear duct. Both of my little girls had one eye that had the problem. It can go on for quite awhile. You are supposed to clean/massage it with each diaper change to get it under control. It seems to take forever to really go away and can last up until she is a year old. My 6 month old is finally a month free of it. Hopefully your daughter will clear up sooner.
Congratulations on your new baby girl!

My daughter had the same thing around the same age. After doing some research, I put some breast milk in her eye. It was cleared up by the next day. Apparently the antibacterial properties in the breast milk killed the infection. That stuff is like liquid gold, I swear!

My son had this same problem at one week and a friend of mine's daughter did at 4 weeks. We both thought our babies had pink eye, but in fact they had a blocked tear duct. We were told to put a warm washcloth over the eye in the corner near the tear duct. This is also how we cleaned the goop. It could also be pink eye, in which case our doctor told us to drop breastmilk into the baby's eye until we could go in to the doctor that Monday.

My Son had the same problem when he was a few weeks old. We took him to our pediatrician and it ended up being a blocked tear duct. His was infected a little bit, so the dr. prescribed an antibiotic which cleared it up right away (within a few days). You can also massage the corner of the eye a little bit, too, to try and break up some of the crusty stuff. But my advice would definitely be to take her to the pediatrician and get antibiotics if she needs them. Good luck! And, don't worry about the blocked tear duct... it is very common in little babies.

Clogged tear duct! If you call, they will tell you to massage the inside of her nose, right next to her eye, with your pinky finger. As long as the fluid stays clear or yellow-ish and doesn't turn green they probably won't even have you bring her in. Good luck!
