Eye Issues in New Mom

I gave birth about two months ago, and since then my right eye has fogged up two or three times. It happens quite suddenly, usually quite soon after putting in my contact lens. Removing the lens seems to do the trick, but it's not instantaneous. The last time this happened, it took nearly all day to clear. Switching to a new set of contact lenses thus far has worked, but I never had this problem before pregnancy. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi New Mom,

I would believe that the best thing to do at this time is to seek proper medical advice. It could be an allergy or maybe you're not sleeping right. The doctor could best tell.

Have your eye doctor check your eye because a friend recently was told she had an infection in her cornea. She also wears contact lenses but never had any itching or pain. She just went in for her regular check-up, but she did told me her eye would fog-up in the morning.

BC,

I am not a doctor by any stretch but I do know that breast milk is mother nature's cure all. In fact, mom's often squirt it in their newborn's eyes to clear up lots of stuff. It's perhaps worth a try on your own!

Good luck,
K.

Hey there! I have two boys (4 and 2 1/2) and after both of their births I experienced vision difficulties. I wear contacts and after both were born I had a change in vision and couldn't wear my contacts the as long or even often as I could before. BUT it has all gone back to normal after about 6 months or so of each birht. My eyes tend to need a break from contacts more often then prior to children but my vision did go back to where it was. My optimologist did tell me he didn't want to mess with my perscription until after my baby was 6 months to a year old because it is very common to have vision changes due to hormones. And he was right, all adjusted after about 6 months.
The only advice I have is to go see your eye doctor and just get his opinion on what your eyes are doing to make sure it isn't something beyond hormones that needs attention.
Good luck!
JB

I'm an optometrist. This doesn't sound like an emergency, but it could turn into a serious problem. You should discontinue wearing your contact lenses and see your optometrist. I definitely advise against squirting breast milk into your contact lenses or into anyone's eyes, yours or your baby's. It's just not sterile. Your situation does indeed sound like protein or mucous build-up or something similar brought on by all of the hormone changes in your body. If your vision is still foggy after removing your lenses, you could have a conjunctivitis secondary to lens wear. The most common is called GPC, giant papillary conjunctivitis, which means you'll have to stop lens wear and possibly take medicated eye drops (talk to your doctor and optometrist about the medication if you're breastfeeding). But you do want to have your eyes, contact lenses and lens care routine evaluated. It may be as easy to fix as changing the type/brand of contact lenses you're using or even changing your lens care routine, but you may, unfortunately, need to discontinue lens wear and use your back-up glasses (hope they're pretty and up-to-date!--I always tell my own contact lens patients to make sure they have back-up glasses they'd drive with and be seen in public with!) You don't want to continue wearing your foggy lenses as this can cause other conditions to develop.

Sounds like new contact lenses were in order but you could be low in potassium. I would continue taking your prenatal vitamins and eat more bananas. I had a similar situation where I was seeing black spots. Bananas did the trick.

The time my eye and therefore lens fogged up my doctor said I was producing excess protein. It was very frustrating. I don't know if this is what is happening with you but I would take my lenses out til I saw my doctor. Best of luck!!!

many new moms experience an increase in vision loss with pregnancy. Some moms lose hair or get cavities, for me it was eye sight. With all the nutrients that baby needs, they take them from mom. You should see you eye doctor to see if you need a stronger prescription, I know I did.
