She probably has a blocked tear duct. Usually this is not a serious problem, but I would get it looked at. They will give you some eye drops and it will probably open on it's own in time.
Hello, ladies...
My daughter is 7 weeks old. She's had a discharge from the corner of her right eye that gets crusty if I don't catch it in time and wipe it clean. It's been a few days now but was really bad today. She has an appt at the Drs on the 22nd. Should I call and try to get her in earlier? Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? Thanks so much!!

It may be a clogged tear duct. My daughter had one and she always had a discharge. clean your finger and massage that area and use a warm washcloth. They usually clear on their own, although my daughters didn't and we had to take her to the eye doctor, but it is really common.
Sorry to riley, but i would never use cigarette smoke on a baby. Please don't.
Try using a warm, wet wash cloth and wiping from the inner corner of the eye down, toward the nose 10 times. That will help open her tear duct and allow better drainage, if a blocked tear duct is the problem. Do this at least 3 times/day. I would also call for an earlier eye apt. If the white of your daughter's eye is pink or red, she may have an eye infection, which is easily treated with opthalmic antibacterial onitment (available only by prescription). Wiping with a wet cloth will help no matter what the problem, but it probably won't resolve on its own if it's an infection.
Hello -
I would suspect that it is a clodded tear duct. This is common in babies and usually they "grow" out of it. Warm compresses will help ease the goop.
But like always I would ask the doctor just to double check it isnt an infection - I found that if it is a clodded tear duct it usually bothers the parents and others more than the baby because of the way it looks! Call the doctor to confirm most definitely!
My son had the same persistent eye discharge... The doctor wanted me to massage the tear duct twice a day to get anything out and use a saline solution (for contact lenses) to wipe anything away. It will definitely go away after a while... it's something like their tear duct isn't matured or something similar to that.
Good luck! :)
I would almost guarantee you that it's a blocked tear duct.
You can squirt some breastmilk in her eye & massage her tear duct toward her nose.
Getting her a chiropractic adjustment would almost certainly clear it up almost immediately!
I agree with Janette. I a lot of babies have blocked tear ducts that can take months to fully "develop". I close friend's baby had her's blocked for almost 3 months before it finally became unblocked and stopped being crusty and gooey. Unless it gets pink/red I wouldn't call the doctor.
Hi, I am a certified homeopath and you might check out the homeopathic remedy pulsatilla or Euphrasia this could help and there are no side-effects from homeopathic remedies, check them out on Google. Good luck
Hi there,
Both my daughters had it at around 6-7 weeks, it's often as a result of a blocked tearduct but requires some eye drops/ cream.
Call your ped and get necessary meds.
Best of luck wiyth your little one they are so precious!!!
I know pink eye is running rampant through our school so I wonder if that could be a possibility. You may want to move your appointment up because if the eye is swelled it could out pressure on the nerve and do damage. It's not worth the risk. Call the pediatrician.
I would go in sooner, absolutely.
Here for eye infections we do the cigarette smoke trick. Cup around the eye and blow smoke onto the eye about once an hour. Gets rid of pinkeye in under 24 hours, as well as many other kinds of eye infections.
I learned the trick in combat training when we had over 1000 people with eye infections (those things spread like crazy), so the wait for medical was over a week long. The first group (about 200) who did the smoke trick were infection clear by taps... so most of the remainder signed on the next day. ((Trust me, over 500 people all blowing smoke into cupped hands on people's eyes is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen.)) Those who abstained were still putting cream in their eyes for a couple of days later... it took 4-5 days for their infections to clear up. I've used the smoke trick as a line of first offense ever since. AKA infection starts, blow smoke for day 1, if it's not at least 50% better to clear by 12 hours later, make a doctor's appt for the next day. I make my living using my eyes, I don't mess around with eye health.
I know this sounds weird, but if you squirt a little breastmilk in there it should clear right up. It is naturally antibacterial ... fresh bm. Other moms told me and it worked. Also, use a warm cloth and wipe her eye gently, she may have a blocked tear duct that should open up on its own, but if not give a call to your pediatrician.
It sounds like a blocked tear duct. My daughter had this until she was 1. The DR gave us drops but they really didn't work. Just use a warm wash cloth and clean it up. It will clear on own. If it doesn't by age 1 they have to surgically open the duct.
My son had pink eye at 6 weeks old. Call the doc and they will give you an ointment for her eye. She will probably spread it to the other one, so be prepared for that. Good luck.
