A few years back I had one eye that was tearing constantly, running down my face as if I was crying. I went to an eye Dr. Torture specialist who said that I had a clogged tear duct. He took some kind of thing and was probing my tear duct and twirling it about and pushing it in and out while flushing it. I was a wreck, he also told me to hold still, and that I needed to get some kind of sinus spray and unclog it from the other side, and if that didn't work, while he didn't look forward to having me in his chair again, that I'd have to come back and repeat the procedure....yeah right! I worked in a real estate office with someone who was a retired eye surgeon, a teaching professor and research scientist. When she saw me at the company Christmas party she asked me what was going on with my eye. I told her about the experience and she just shook her head and took me to the bathroom. After thoroughly scrubbing her hands, she had me get under the light and she looked very closely at my eyes and her diagnosis was this: " the eyes have a thin gelatinous membranes full of microscopic little capillaries that protect the eye. Something has gotten in there, pollen, hair, dust or something, irritated your eye and inflamed that membrane. The eye thinks there is still a foreign object in there because that membrane is so inflammed and is trying to wash it out. Go to the pharmacy and buy the drops "Opcon A" ...they used to be prescription and are now OTC. The "A" stands for "antihistamine" and will reduce the inflammation. The first night she had me put three drops in the eye and go to bed, the next day, 3 drops every 4 or 5 hours, the next day 3 drops every 4 or 5 hours, and the next day 2 drops every 4 or 5 hours, on the last day, I think that I started out with 2 drops in the morning and tapered down to one drop before bed. She was dead on the $. and I had IMMEDIATE relief that first night, and never had a problem again. I still use the drops occassionally, and I will tell you that some times they sting for just an oh so brief moment...like a flash when I first drop them in, but then the relief is instant. Thanks to Dr. Cindy!
