I am sick of my eyes watering! I think I have dry eyes. I am almost convinced it is not allergies, because I have never had allergies and no one in my family does either. I have no other symptoms either.
My sister said she had this watery eye problem and her doc advised her to do eye drops. I know nothing about eye drops.

Could someone tell me which ones to get OTC?

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Jo, it happens all year round though, that is also why I do not think it is allergies. I dunno...

There is enough pollen in the air to give anyone symptoms of allergies. I mean it is a powder that is being breathed in and sucked into your eyes. Even if it doesn't trigger an allergic reaction you still have to deal with removing it from your eyes and nose.

Oh, don't get Visine, it hurts more than it helps. Get an eye moisturizer.

As an opthalmalogist's assistant, I would say start with systane. If that doesnt work, try going to an ophathalmologist. It is covered by your medical insurance if it is a medical problem and not for glasses. They will do a dry eye test, very easy to have done and may recommend something else. There is something available now called plugs. They are painless and would be inserted into the corners of your eyes, also covered by most insurances, and it will keep the tears in, which will keep your eyes from constantly watering. Hope that helps you!!

My eye doctor suggested the liquid eye drops but can't remember the name, maybe Systane. You could check with a pharmacist if you want to try them and there are other brands of them. First though, I would ask the optometrist or whatever eye doctor you see. These drops just keep the eye from watering or getting too dry.

I'd check in with your eye doctor first just to be sure that there is nothing wrong. I use the tried and true Visine. I wear contacts so I get the bottle made specifically for contacts, but there is a variety of choices.

I have also tried the RhoTo brand as well. They made the whites of my eyes super white, but the pain wasn't quite worth it! It was like dropping little ice cubes into your eyes.

Good luck and I hope that the eye drops solve the problem for you!

A few years back I had one eye that was tearing constantly, running down my face as if I was crying. I went to an eye Dr. Torture specialist who said that I had a clogged tear duct. He took some kind of thing and was probing my tear duct and twirling it about and pushing it in and out while flushing it. I was a wreck, he also told me to hold still, and that I needed to get some kind of sinus spray and unclog it from the other side, and if that didn't work, while he didn't look forward to having me in his chair again, that I'd have to come back and repeat the procedure....yeah right! I worked in a real estate office with someone who was a retired eye surgeon, a teaching professor and research scientist. When she saw me at the company Christmas party she asked me what was going on with my eye. I told her about the experience and she just shook her head and took me to the bathroom. After thoroughly scrubbing her hands, she had me get under the light and she looked very closely at my eyes and her diagnosis was this: " the eyes have a thin gelatinous membranes full of microscopic little capillaries that protect the eye. Something has gotten in there, pollen, hair, dust or something, irritated your eye and inflamed that membrane. The eye thinks there is still a foreign object in there because that membrane is so inflammed and is trying to wash it out. Go to the pharmacy and buy the drops "Opcon A" ...they used to be prescription and are now OTC. The "A" stands for "antihistamine" and will reduce the inflammation. The first night she had me put three drops in the eye and go to bed, the next day, 3 drops every 4 or 5 hours, the next day 3 drops every 4 or 5 hours, and the next day 2 drops every 4 or 5 hours, on the last day, I think that I started out with 2 drops in the morning and tapered down to one drop before bed. She was dead on the $. and I had IMMEDIATE relief that first night, and never had a problem again. I still use the drops occassionally, and I will tell you that some times they sting for just an oh so brief moment...like a flash when I first drop them in, but then the relief is instant. Thanks to Dr. Cindy!
