Eye Color; Slight Discoloration... Normal or Not?

Okay, THREE questions in one day... please don't judge my cluttered house ;)

Anyway, I JUST noticed that my 13 month old son has a slight discoloration in a teeny spot on one eye. Not a spot, just a little section. His eye's are light grayish blue, but there's one section on one eye that almost looks hazel (like my fiance's eyes). Never noticed it before. It don't look like a spot or a freckle, it's like a section, I don't know how else to explain it. I know people can have freckles on their eyes, 2 different colored eyes, etc... but when is something like this a cause for concern? I hope it's nothing, it's actually kind of cute ;)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This is pretty interesting considering I learned (okay, it was forever ago) in some med class I was taking that babies eyes are usually done changing by 6 months. As long as this isn't screaming 'cancer', then I think it's adorable and I kind of hope it stays as is! Thanks ladies!

my daughter has the same thing. One is all blue with a spec of brown and one is all brown with a spec of blue. It was something I was concerened about. It is so amazing...the color and it is so unique. My eye doctor said she obviously had a changing eye color peirod and it stopped. So it never finished changing in pigment. It was nothing........that is how it was going to be forever.

She is 11 now and is just fine.

Sounds exactly like My nephew's wife's eyes...a little fleck of a different color. When you see the pediatrician next time just have 'em take a look...I'll bet he's fine. How unique. :)

I don't know -- really -- but sometimes kids' eyes change color at around one year. My son had blue eyes until he was 11 mos. old, now they are hazel, almost green. My daughter's eyes are blue and did not change. My husband is Latino and everyone was sure their eyes would change to brown, which is very common (two of my nieces on my husband's side were born with blue eyes that changed). So, it may be that his eyes will change color slightly. If you are concerned, though, it might warrant a call to the pediatrician.

My son was born with blue eyes, one of them had a brown spot for the first several months of his life. Eventually, they both turned brown. I think he was about a year old.

It's called partial (or sectoral) heterochromia. My son has it (he's 7) and so does his cousin (my oldest nephew - he's 17). It is pretty uncommon in people but it is pretty cool and most of the time harmless.
Most eye docs will not see kids under 5, and you should not be too worried about it. If it REALLY bothers you, ask the pediatrician on his next checkup to look at his eyes to rule out anything else.

just looked it up for you (good article here): http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/938345/heterochr...

I doubt it's anything. If you think he has vision problems you might bring it up to you MD but otherwise I bet it's nothing to worry about. :-)

When I was young I met a young man who had eyes that were divided like pies and each section was different color; brown blue and green. Each color and very distinct. Rare I am guessing as I have seen nothing like it since but I don't recall him having any difficulties. Worth a question to the pediatrician but I would guess nothing to panic over.

One of my boys has grey/blue eyes but on one, he has a light brown stripe horizontal from the black center out to the side. I think it's sooo cool. He's still young so he doesn't notice.

I'm sure it's common.

My son had the same thing; his eyes were blue until around 1 year, then started to get little sections of hazel in the middle, more on 1 eye than the other. They kept growing until 1 eye now is mostly hazel and the other one is about half hazel and half blue-gray (he's 3 1/2 now). It is normal and quite striking; he gets compliments on them :)
