Extreamly Quick Breakfast's for VERY Picky 11 Month Old

ok smart mama's I go to school pretty early, I try to get up earlier, but it's hard. . .as we all know. My son is super picky and has been since he first started solids at 4 months. I've tried everything. Egg's, pancakes, waffles, fruit, veggy's, oatmeal (which he sometimes will eat). He wont even look at them. He loves Kix. I'm wanting to expand his pallet which I know will come with time, but seriously. Kix Anything puffy he'll eat. The Gerber veggies puff, fruit puffs. Puffs. He likes Baby Mums, but again its puffy. Pretty much anything that isn't a puffy texture, he hates. BUT for dinner he likes Bratwurst. Random I know. I tried it out of desperation and he LOVES them!! HELP PLEASE! Is there anyway I can make a batch of oatmeal (not that crappy instant kind) and refrigerate it then heat it up when in the morning since he sometimes will eat it?

So What Happened?

He's actually picky 24/7 and not just in the mornings. Seriously the puffs and bratwurst are all he eats. The day care says he eats spaghetti noodles. I've tried here at home and its a no go. I've been thinking about trying fruit smoothies and may just maybe he might eat fruit that way. Crossing my fingers. I think I'll try making muffins with fruit and veggies in them and maybe he'll like that.
Oh and I don't make him the plain oatmeal, I add all sorts of fruits and even put brown sugar in it once.

If you have to go to school early then am I correct in assuming that you want him to eat before you leave and then drop him off at daycare? Maybe he's not ready to eat that early , does he have milk when he get's up? Maybe give him milk and then let him have breakfast at daycare , if he likes puffy type things , will he eat cheerios? You could send some in a ziploc bag with some milk and let daycare feed him.

Just re read my response , I don't mean mix the cheerios and milk in the bag together!lol....send the milk seperate

Does he like fruit? I used to get those little fruit cups from the store and empty out the liquid, then just serve my boy the pears/peaches/mixed fruit on his high chair. He would love it because he can pick them up and eat them all by himself without my help.

I freeze oatmeal all the time .

Steel cut oats with unsweetened coconut flakes and mango and cinnamon and nutmeg and vanilla and toasted nuts and honey....mmmmm.

Sorry, went to my happy oatmeal place for a second. It holds up great and it is easy to warm. I haven't tried it with rolled oats, but I imagine you'd get the same results.

Not all instant is bad! I got some from Trader Joe's. Apple cinnamon and it was tasty.

Also, don't constrain yourself by "breakfast" foods. My daughter's favorite breakfast at that age was pot roast that I had pureed with brown rice and vegetables.

Try yogurt, too. Greek yogurt has twice the protein of regular yogurt and usually doesn't have HFCS. There are also a whole host of healthier breakfast cereals that can serve in a pinch. Kashi has a cinnamon flavored one which is a great alternative to Cheerios.

I agree with a previous poster, he just may not be ready to eat that early.

I mix Cheerios with vanilla yogurt for my kids (easier than dealing with milk on cereal). Sometimes that mushes in an oatmeal-like texture. You can get recipes for oatmeal bars that might taste good and you could pop them in the microwave.

My kids LOVED and still do--plain rice crispies--no sugar added, the multigrain Cheerios, graham crackers, Quaker granola bars, oatmeal w/ a bit of fruit mixed in it, toast and cinnamon toast, bagels, etc.

Hi Megan,
My grandmother used to fix a big batch of either oatmeal or cream of wheat at the the begiining of the week. Then, she'd put it in a leftover dish (or bread pan), refrigerate it, and slice it up and fry the slices the following mornings. Not the healthiest alternative but we loved it with a little maple syrup over the slices. Today I make oatmeal and use Coache's Oats (available from Costco). They're like steel cut but a lot cheaper and much more nutricious than the instant sugary stuff. Good luck and hope he likes it!

How about mini pancakes, toaster strudels, baked apples with cinnamon, cherrios covered with yogurt. I got my baby to eat vegetables by making chow mein for her, brown rice with gravyand whatever veggies I wanted, or parmesan noodles and veggies. Good Luck.

Sure. You can make oatmeal and refridgerate it. Just add a little water or milk to thin it out before reheating. You could always try smoothies in the morning too. My daughter loves those. Oh, and French toast sticks.

I used "Super Baby Food" for my boys. Not everything is a hit, but you can try to get the biggest bang for your buck and there are lots of ideas.

Not sure about reheating pre-cooked oatmeal, but making oatmeal from the cannister is rather simple... hot and fresh! I put 1/3 cup QUICK oats and 2/3 cup water (cool tap water is good) into a microwave safe bowl. I then microwave it for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on High. Gotta watch it toward the end as it may boil over. Simply stir it well, add whatever you add to your oatmeal and eat it! I personally like mine with about 4 oz of fruity yogurt... and occasionally add some chopped fruit (strawberries, blueberries, peaches, bananas...). Now if you're making OLD FASHIONED oats, then you really have to cook that... I'd go ahead and try making a batch and reheating it in the microwave!

My son's newest breakfast thing that is "puffy" is the cereal Puffins put out by Barbara's brand. It's a healthy food brand,but its right in my regular grocery store. They are really good.
What about muffins or something? I just made last night carrot muffins from : http://www.ifood.tv.recipe/carrot_raisin_muffins
( I just used raisin bran instead of the seperate bran flakes and raisins they are really good and healthy)

well he is still pretty young and it can take kids time to like more foods. My kids liked baked potatoes, hard boiled eggs, pop tarts, just dry cereal, or mini bagels. They also liked the french toast waffles just dry with no syrup. My daughter went through a phase where she didn't want any breakfast so I would give her the little premade smoothies. They are in the yogurt section at the store and at least I knew she was getting something healthy in the morning. I know you said you don't like the instant kind of oatmeal but they come in so many fruity flavors your son might like it better than regular oatmeal. It can be hard at this age but her will get better.

Trader Joe's has breakfast chicken sausages that my son loves. DS didn't start eating them until after he was 1, but since you said your DS eats bratwurst, I thought I'd suggest it. You can always make them the night before then warm them up in the microwave in the morning if you're in a hurry. That with a little toast on the side and a piece of fruit.

Try pop tarts or even the breakfast hot pockets. They have bacon egg cheese, ham egg cheese or sausage egg cheese ones. I think all kids go through the picky stage. My oldest (6 yrs) didn't want to eat what I fixed until he was 3 or 4, it was a lot of hot dogs, chicken nuggets etc. I am experiencing the with my almost 2 year old. But as long as they are eating something he willb e okay. Good luck.

I do oatmeal with maple syrup and cinnamon. My kids love it! The three of them eat 4 adult size servings. I usually make a double batch and throw the rest in the fridge. A little extra syrup when I reheat it, and it's good to go. I do the old fashioned kind and cook according to the directions, when it's all done, add the syrup and cinnamon.

Just a thought, since it seems to be a texture thing, have you thought about getting him evaluated for sensory issues? It's free through the public schools, and the services are great. One thing they did for my kids at that age was start out with the puffy things so that the mouth was "warmed up" and then go to other foods. GL!

1/2 cup of regular oatmeal and one cup of water in a large microwave safe bowl for 4 minutes...then you can add raisins or craisins...I like mine with walnuts and brown sugar as well

I make my 11 month old and 2 year old oatmeal "balls".
I make regular oatmeal (not instant) and let it cook slow. Kinda gets a bit gummy. I add agave nectar (since they say babies can't use honey) and a dash of cinnamon while cooking. You can certainly use honey if your doc says your kiddo is ready.
Once it cools a bit, I scoop out small "balls" onto a plate. I let them cool a bit more. I suppose you could make them ahead of time and warm them up in the morning. Just don't heat for too long since the center might get hot fast! Just take the chill off, don't make them hot!

I see you mention noodles... I don't make the long noodles I do the spirals or other small shapes. I pour on the baby food for flavor. I use fruits in the morning and the veggies at lunch. She is over baby food plain, but if I pour them over noodles she is getting all the good stuff, while feeding herself! This is a lifesavor since I can make ahead of time. Also in the veggie ones I sprinkle cheese when I first make it so it melts a tiny bit and that helps to add calories. The spiral noodles hold lots of the "sauce". We don't do fruit over them very often, but I have in the past. This is mainly our dinner solution and man does she suck them down! She doesn't even realize they are good for her!
