Hello fellow moms! I am interested in starting to use probiotics, like the yogurt-type drinks, for general wellness and to boost my immunity- any suggestions or info you could give me? Do any of you who use these feel like it's made a difference?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
Sorry this is late. I'm just getting caught up with emails now after the holiday and wanted to respond to this. Shaklee optiflora (probiotics) are awesome and much better than anything else out there. They have a triple encapsulation to protect the probiotics so that they aren't destroyed by your stomach acid. If they get destroyed, then they could never make it to your intestines where they need to be to do you any good. I am lactose intolerant and have taken acidopholous for years but never noticed any benefits to it until I started Shaklee. Right away, I came to realize that while taking the probiotics, I wasn't lactose intolerant anymore. It literally gave me what I needed so that I could process dairy - something nothing else ever helped me with! I was amazed and as you can imagine quite pleased. I am a distributor and could give you more information, so let me know if you'd like that.

Thanks,
K.

Just went to a GI specialist yesterday (have had stomach problems for about 8 years, varying degrees). My primary doctor and I have done about all we could -- tested for a variety of things, tried one probiotic (pill) that made it worse, tried the yogurt with some help but can't eat it everyday, added more fiber to diet, etc. This new GI doctor discussed the different probiotics available and gave me a sample for one - Align which is available at pharmacy OTC. I'm hopeful. What was most interesting was the various kinds of probiotics out there and that they really vary in how much each product has. Try one out and mention it to your doctor at your next visit.

I've heard great things about them. Another option is to go to Walgreens and buy the probiotics (sold over the counter, but must get fron pharmacist). You can add to any food and voila, you are good to go.

Good luck!

Hi L.:

As I was reading your post I remembered I have to drink mine Lol! I use the pearl size probiotics daily, I buy it at The Vitamin Shoppe, the box is about $12.00. I really do see a difference. I always have stomach problems and when I drink it everyday I don't experience any pains or discomfort. When I skip it for a week or so, my discomfort comes back but if I keep on a regular basis I see a world of difference. The yogurt is not the same as the actual tiny pill. Try it, I think you'll like it.

Hi L.,

I have used probiotics for 8 years and wouldn't ever miss them. Yogurt-type drinks have a small amount of probiotics. You want to take one that guarantees live delivery to the colon which is where the probiotic does its job. I always am cautious to say things like this, but I used to have urinary tract infections 2-3 times a year and haven't had one since I started taking it. I use Shaklee's Optiflora which is a little "pearl" with 3 coatings on it. The final coating breaks down in the colon. It has also helped me resist stomach flu or other gastric issues. When starting a good probiotic, go slowly. You could do some detoxing as it tries to get rid of the bad stuff in your colon. I have given the Optiflora to my granddaughter since she was 3 months old and started having ear infections. When she was tiny, I would soak the tablet until it was soft and then get a little in her mouth. Now at 17 months (she was born the day before your son), she just pops it in her mouth. Causes of ear infections can be complicated, but between supplementation, the chiropractor and a change in daycare, she has managed to stay free of ear infections probably for over 8 months.
